Router help

Tea1337

So today after coming home to found out that my router burnt out, literally and I replaced it with a cheapo Netgear router that I had laying around that cost me like $18 and I am not sure what model it is. But lately my speeds have been around 1.34/.80 and a 68ms ping. I'm supposed to be getting 8/6, and usually got those speeds before my router died.

But as of lately, my speeds have been much, much slower, my ping went way up from the usual 10ms. Could my backup router be dying? I've never had one die on me and I'm not sure if it's my ISP, or possibly my router.

EDIT: The router is a NetGear N300, and needs a firmware update, but I'm not sure if that will fix it if it needs to be restarted every 45 minutes.
