Mail In Rebates Aren't Scams

applebook

Many of you already know this, but a vocal percentage continue to perpetuate the myth that manufacturer mail in rebates are just scams.

Here are my 3 last rebates: Thermaltake Water 2 Extreme, Zalman liquid AIO, and Thermaltake Poseidon. To date, I've received all but 2 rebates (MSI mobo $25 and Crucial RAM $10). That's a success rate of around 18/20 overall, with most in the $15-25 range. I know for sure that I messed up the Crucial offering, but I'm still uncertain about MSI. The fastest rebate that I ever received was from Azza, who mailed a check (not a gift card) within a few weeks. Most of the others were 2-6 months (don't expect speedy service).

You might not think that these rebates are worth your time, but they add up over the years. I've probably saved around $250-300 in that time. Not too bad for 30 combined minutes of work and a few bucks in stamps.

I can confirm that ASUS honors their mail in rebates. They also offer a plan to pay a small fee and get the rebate much faster.

Since these are used like credit cards, you should either need to present these in person or verify your full name for online merchants. ;)

You mean there is still hope?

I never include them in my final price. It's hit and miss.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

You never know, some online merchants might not verify the name/billing address.

And on topic, I always submit the MIRs. I've received $100s from Patriot, Corsair, and probably some other companies as well.

I never quite understood why MIRs are not always honored.

The buyer likely missed a step or was late. It's also possible that the rebate processing folks just screwed up. If it's a legit company like MSI, Corsair, Thermaltake, etc. I'm pretty convinced that your rebate will be honored if done correctly.

You mean there is still hope?

I never include them in my final price. It's hit and miss.

I don't expect to receive them all either, so usually it makes sense to buy particular products only if the full price is decent to begin with. The Poseidon keyboard at $89.99 CDN was fine with me. At $69.99, it's a steal.

They send gift cards? Now i know how mir work xD

All other rebates that I've received were cash checks. These are the first gift cards that I've seen. In the past, I would always avoid these, but it seems like most companies are going with Amex cards now.

I sent out a total of 4 mirs when I initially bought my parts for my current rig. I sent out the forms, well filled, with product code, after I registered all of them seperately online. I received a total of 0 rebates. Their excuse : WE DIDN'T RECEIVE ANYTHING.

I am so burned out from MIRs. Honestly, some of them take so much time to do correctly it is like flipping burgers at McDonald's considering the hourly rate!

Two MIRs from my build required that I cut out the mailing address from the printed form to use as a label, as if my pen couldn't be used correctly or some crap. I'm surprised some don't ask for a blood seal or to use only florescent pink ink.

MIRs are not a "scam", but pretty close to it. They take into account that not everyone will fill out the forms perfectly and in turn keep a lot more cash. It would be cheaper for the companies to offer an "at the register" discount to eliminate the 3rd party MIR company most use; yet they know lots of the MIRs won't be processed so it saves them money in the long run. It pisses me off that rebate companies even exist, there should not be people making a living off of what could be a simple discount process.

There are people who's work actually produces something useful to society, and there are skimmers...people who's professions just take a piece of another pie without benefiting the community in any meaningful way. MIR companies are skimmers at the lowest level. There is no reason that industry needs to exist.

This is all just my opinion of course, I guess I am tired of filling those things out!

I have always sent in and received MIRs, even one for $2 on a set of spark plugs...

I recently took a trip with my dad to a Menards. There was a box of -shirts that were like six bucks and the little flyer on them said free after mail in rebate. The reason Menards can do this s because about 90% of people never send those rebates in.

I never knew anyone that thought they were a scam.

The year is 20XX. Everyone plays Fox at TAS levels of perfection. Because of this, the winner of a match depends solely on port priority. The RPS metagame has evolved to ridiculous levels due to it being the only remaining factor to decide matches.

How long ago did you send them out? Did you receive an e-mail confirmation that they were received? Did you provide copies of the receipts?
