Pentium G3258 + gigabyte Z97X SOC Force Unboxing and overclocking Review (Voltage scaling done 09/07/14)

Jumper118

If the bios doesnt allow you to monitor it, then obviously no :P

aww :(. Well it does allow it in the 3D bios setting but i hate it personally.

I really want Gigabyte to make an orange mitx board. It doesn't have to have all the features that the OC has but I just want an orange board.

i am using an olympus D720 which is a compact camera that i got off ebay for £40. its pretty good for a compact. its got 10x optical zoom and the super macro is incredible compared with any other compact i've had.

I have some crap Canon model which costs more than that and makes pictures like my 2 MP phone camera so I just might be trying out that Olympus. It's off topic so thank you for answering and great job with that review, that Pentium is a beast if you don't run too many threads.

I'm going to do some tests with some gpu's to see what the pentium can do. unfortunately i can't run sli because the cooler is too big but you can see what it looks like.

I also took the opportunity of having the gpu bracket to do some size comparisons between gpus.

The gpu's are:

MSI HD7970 Lightning BE

MSI GTX670 PE OC

Zotac 9800GTX+

Inno 3D 9600GT

EVGA GT610

Asus 8400GS

wow that makes me look like an nvidia fanboy and i hate nvidia cards :(

Benches (i've got a few more now with a couple of other cards. i will do hevan and valley as well, but i have to resize them and i'll do that tomorrow, i also need to borrow the psu from my main rig to power the bigger cards so i'll probably get that sorted a bit later on this week):

Pretty cool review dude! Makes me want one of those too ^^

Can you test how much the cpu bottlenecks high end gpu's in modern games? Maybe with a nice i5 or i7 as a comparison (if you have one that is ^^)? :)

OP, in your opinion, would that cpu be better than an AMD A10 FM2 5700 APU 3.4ghz (3.5 turbo) for gaming, and general home use?

I'm considering getting one with a decently priced z97 motherboard, and I'm wondering whether or not it will be better than the cpu/mobo I have now in games like bf4/3/bc2, metro 2033 and L.L., skyrim, etc.

Side note: I have a gtx660 ftw from EVGA

it was very good on the motherboard side of things, i only had to clear the cmos once.

haswell has a great imc, so it can hold fast ram. it runs at 1600mhz out the box the i just enabled xmp to get mine to run at 2400mhz

No shit? I'm glad i bought 2400 ram then LOL.

i cant really test games, because the only modern games i have are on steam and they take 2+ days to download :( i can run most benchmarks though because i have most of them and i have scores from my i5 as well to compare.

Thanks.  :) i'll try and get a speadsheet done with how it scales with voltage as well.

it all depends on how well they overclock. at the moment i have an athlon x4 740@4.3ghz (similar to the amd a10) and pentium@4.9ghz. the pentium is much faster at the speeds i've got them at and it is a lot more power efficient, but if you got a bad one that could only do 4.2-4.4ghz then the athlon will be faster. also look at the athlon 760k is you already have a gpu.

the 7970 and 9800gtx+ pushed the cpu hardest with the fans on the cooler ramping up loads in valley with the 7970 and it was unstable in cinebench r15 with the 9800gtx+ and so i had to give it a bit more voltage.

the amd drivers weren't much of a pain today and it only took 3 attempts to install them :)

heaven 4.0 and possibly the spreadsheet with voltage scaling tomorrow.

the forum didn't like the pics of the lightning so here is a video for ya. the hdd is the thing making that awful grinding/crunching as is a 160gb drive from a dell that was in a skip :P

The GPU actually doesn't make that much of a difference. Its all about the CPU. I'm getting the download links ready. Ill send you a pm with them

Looks like its a great cpu for dolphin since it only needs two cores.
