how fast can you type?

Frank Brown

It's usually Symbols per Minute, sometimes Words per Minute. I'd say for a relatively fast writer Symbols per Minute are over 300 and Words per Minute over 85.

I just wanted to know how fast some people can type and so i thought of putting my question on this forum. If you could tell me how many words you can type per minute and your age just so i could get a rough average on typing speeds. I can do normally 29 words per minute and at best i can do 39 words per minute.

39 seems pretty low if that is your fastest :D

this is an example of one I did before

That's a LOT better than what I can do on that test. I've never been able to break the habit of looking at my keyboard when I type so in reality unless I'm copying something word for word like that test I can usually type much faster. I beat "32%" of people. This is the first time I took that test though, I'll keep it bookmarked so I can get some more practice. Getting a mechanical keyboard really helps in typing situations because the audible click helps reinforce confirmation of your actions when not looking at it I think.

Maybe looking at the keyboard is better for my eyes than the screen as a side note.

That was my second attempt (first was super bad)

and it was on my old G15 membrane keyboard, and at work on the crappy 15" monitor I use

at home on my mech and being all comfy i can get close to 110 but with less accuracy as I go faster and faster and cos i have small hands so my mech board is spaced apart more making it harder for me

i never look at my keyboard

I just retook it forcing myself to not look at the keyboard and the reult was even slower, but surprisingly it didn't feel that much slower. my biggest issue was that I kept confusing the location of a few keys like the letter "i" for some reason.

I was tested a few jobs ago, and at the time I was peaking at about 80 WPM. On my own Corsair K90 at home I think I get more like 60–70.

I find my MX Red switches at home a bit too light and I think I tend to make more mistakes when typing at high speed. I also tend to bottom them out and I don't really know how to stop. :P But whatever the reason I seem to type much faster on cheap rubber dome keyboards. I'd be interested to see how I do with Browns or Blues, but I haven't had a chance to try.

Edit: Here's my score with my Apple Magic Keyboard at the office.

Your score: 366 CPM (that is 73 WPM)

Not bad - I made a few stupid mistakes though. I can push 100 WPM with some practice.

After my second try, I boosted my score:

81 wpm with no errors. Not too bad for 2nd try. I also waited a few hours between testing too, for a more natural experience.

I find that I type the fastest when I'm typing my own words. Preset typing tests don't work as well for me, but I'll give that one a go in a week.

I used to crack 120 to 130 WPM when I was younger and without diabetic neuropathy. Today I go at about 80 to 90 WPM, can still crack 100 if I make a concentrated effort.

97 :l. Surely after having done this over 200 times and having a low key travel mech-keyboard, you can get around 120-170.
