What is the point of the 20th Anniversary Edition Pentium?

I get that Pentium was a legendary line of CPU's, and that this is extremely overclockable, but what is the point of it? It only has 2 cores with 1 thread per core, meaning that it won't even compete with something like an i3 or an i5.  Is Intel just going with an enthusiast approach here, or am I missing something?

hahaha pentium has been unlocked until only recently on the timeline when intel decided to play it unfair..ive had unlocked pentium 3 and even a pentium 4 with hyper threading !

Factory unlocked... Remember, I took a Prescott P4 to 3.5GHz (up from 2.8), so overclocking the older Pentiums isn't that much of a big deal to me...

It's quite unrealistic (and unfair) to expect an ~$80 CPU to directly compete with others costing $200+.

 

The 20th Anniversary Pentium is just a nice little budget CPU intended to celebrate the history of the Pentium brand of Intel chips. It's a surprisingly potent yet very cheap CPU with a nice degree of overclocking headroom.

Why, though? if you want a budget CPU you could go with a 4100 and overclock the hell out of that. Won't bottleneck much and will waste the Pentium.

Maybe AMD will celebrate its Athlon processors by coming out with a CPU that can blast the hell out of Intel.

ahhh now yes, for the price its a nice cpu...many online mmos are single threaded or dual threaded and they will run just as good on this chip as they would on a core i7 beast...

well for me the point is to upgrade my parents pc that I scavanged from a very old alienware.. C2D 8400 in that thing lol.. So power savings(unless i OC it abit) and better performance I think it a very good deal for $70 + new MB cost

It's cheap, works well, and is going to be a ball to overclock before I look at building a small system for the parents with it. I gamed hard back on my 3GHz P4 that I thought was the bomb at the time.

I'm buying it because I can, and it's at the right price point where I don't feel it's overpriced.

At 4.5GHz it will be slightly slower than a 4670k at 4.5GHz, just a perfect value for mmo gamers it's a much better choice than the i3. Just to leave this as reference; its cinebench 11.5 score is close to 4.0

To put that into perspective, my Q2Q at 4.00GHz, which wildly unstable and requires 1.72V to work, scores 4.12

The Pentium only needs at most 1.3V and scores close to 4

Cinebench 11.5 seems to show little difference in architecture, so it's a straight dual core vs quad core battle
