pcie extender...

i need a pcie extender for my computer so that i can lay the graphics card on it's side.

anyone have any suggestions that don't include an ugly ribon cable?

I've actually wondered about this: If you have however many expansion slots, plus an expansion slot, and you are running a dual-slot GPU and run a ribbon cable extender (say, for a PCI-e 1x slot covered up by the two-slot card) to that expansion slot and installed a card in it, would you lose any PCI-e bandwidth on the other slots? Also, I know that plugging in two 16x cards cuts the bandwidth down to 8x/8x, what if you were also running all your PCI-e 1x slots that were available, plus the additional 1x from the extender? Would you lose any bandwidth then?

depends on your chipset ... x79 for example has 40 pci-e lanes, you can easily run two cards at 16x and have 8 lanes left over for other things. Z77 only has 16 lanes so yeah two cards will run at 8x and the board will have a splitter to share the lanes with other pci-e devices. AMD's 990FX has 42 lanes, the 990X has 22 lanes on the cpu and another 4 on the northbridge so again, dual graphics cards run at 8x

So plugging in additional 1x devices into a Z77 that already has a 16x GPU will take bandwidth away from the GPU? And would this cause a noticeable performance degredation in gaming?

No, pretty much any x1 slots on a Z77 board are pcie 2.0, and come from the chipset, not the CPU, so the bandwidth is not shared with the gpu at all
