GPU Strength for 720P vs 1080P?

RubyRoks

So for a build i have planned, i am thinking about getting a card that is very mainstream for use at 1080p, the R9 270. Is this complete overkill for 720p? How much of a difference does bumping the resolution up make? I ask because my monitor's native resolution is 1366x768, but i cannot stand sub-35 FPS. I would run games at the lowest settings possible while maintaining native resolution just to get that target FPS. Keep in mind i play games like Battlefield, CS:GO(not demanding), Insurgency, DayZ, and other games of that nature. The rest of the build's specs can be found in my PCPP link in my signature if that's needed. Thanks for your input :)

you easily get 35fps even with high settings.

Also: Buy a 1080p monitor god damnit! :D

1080p is twice as hard to process for a GPU than 768p.

On mid-low settings the R9 270 can do go over 35 fps on every game, get a 1080p monitor it is worth it.

as stated above, see the bottom post for the 1080p monitor comment. Thanks for your input, it's good to know i can go a while with that card :)

You can't stand 30fps and I can't stand 30fps or 1366x768. :D

lulz i don't mind 1366x768 personally. It looks just fine and the monitor was free :)

the R9 270 is the same as the old HD7870 just slightly overclocked. i had the 7870 running most games at 1080p on high/ultra on most if not all games and keeping above 60 fps

The 270 will have more than enough juice. If saving money is a big deal for you then it might be worth going for 265 as it has a pretty nice price/performance ratio (better than the 270) and is good enough for 1080p so for you it'll be more than enough. I'd think the 265/270 would overclock very handsomely too. Technically the r7 260(x) would be too but that's where you're no longer in the sweet spot for price/performance ratio. Also, it's easier to sell a 265+ than a 260x- for a decent price. P.S. Remember to buy from a vendor that will give you the free games.

Just to verify, have you gamed at 1080p? If not try it out at a friends house or something (sorry I'm just confused to how you like it but it's 100% okay to be fine with that resolution ofc, it just means you have more money in your pocket ^^).

I've played at 1080p and it was awesome, but it wasn't "hey, let's go buy a new monitor and skimp on the GPU" awesome. I'd rather use the monitor i got for free and get epicly overkill framerates than play at 1080p with the settings decreased. I may be able to downsample as well :)

Ah, I see. Maybe when you have a little of £ you can blow go for a 1080p monitor? Maybe even second hand. On Gumtree where I live you can buy second hand 1080p TN Panel monitors for £40-50 here and the saving of a r7 265 vs r9 270 is about £30 :P. But again, it's up to you :P.

i plan on going 4K once it becomes more accessible(next few years). I figure i'll save money throughout this next school year and just blow 3 or 4 thousand on a good 4K gaming PC/Workstation. :)

i tell this to my friend who uses a 768 laptop and a gtx 765m and he is pushing half as many pixles as me on my 1080p monitor but he can run games on ultra and i cant, i facepalm at him
