Wondering If This Network Setup Is Good Or Not

Ethernet

I've posted a thread in the Troubleshotting section before, but my warranty on my motherboard doesn't cover the antenna for wireless internet on my motherboard. So, I found an old router and a old 5 port switch. I'm wondering would this network setup work. Before I post the pictures on the setup, I have an Ethernet cable running from my router to my room, but it is on the other side of my room and I can't move my computer there at all. As I said again, I'm just wondering if this would work or not. Also, sorry for the big images.

Now here is what I'm wondering if this network setup would work:

Yes. I would go with a switch for you and your brother's computers, probably a lot cheaper and will work just fine.

I have both the router and the switch, so it wouldn't matter. This is also a temporary fix until I purchase a wireless network adapter card. Thank you for your feedback.

I'd still use the switch, since you already have a router in the network you might as well keep the second router as a spare, less rewiring to do if you need to swap it in.

It should work fine. Just make sure your switch is at LEAST 10/100, preferably gigabit.

Try to get a gigabit switch if you want to either transfer files between computers, or if your internet speed is around 100Mbps or more. Otherwise 10/100 is cheaper

You can get a TP-link 5 port gigabit switch for less than 40 dollars here in NZ, don't know how much they are where you live, but it is serving my purposes well.

It is an old router so a gigabit switch isn't needed for this because it is a fix until I get a new wireless adapter. Also, my max download speed is 300 Kilobytes per second so there is no need for that anyways. Thank you for your feedback though.

My plan wasn't to buy a switch. This was just going to be a setup until I get a new wireless adapter. I have an old switch laying around and an old router. I was just wondering if that setup would work. Also, the router works but only for wired. If you try connection it wirelessly it won't work. I'm thinking about using the switch but not sure yet.

You should really go with a switch. You will get way better speedtests with it! check out linus's video about different connection types!

I actually went with my router. Reason being is because I still want my computer wireless and now I have better signal since the router is in my room now. Also, internet speeds don't matter for me because I can a max speed of 420 Kilobytes per second. Not bits, bytes. Reason being is because I rather use bytes because that is what you'll actually be seeing compared to Bits where you really don't see it.

This is an example of a download from Keepvid.com,

And, this is my speedtest from speedtest.net. Settings are in Kilometers and Kilobytes.

Frankly it would never have mattered if you went for a switch or wireless router. If your home connection is only 3.46mbit then you're only ever going to get that speed. It's good that you went for a wireless enabled router if you had wireless devices in your room.
