what would happen if i put an AM3+ CPU on a AM3 mobo

If i put an AM3+ CPU on a AM3 mobo, would it tell me an error message or would just nothing happen, since there will be destroyed 1 processor pin that isnt connected to anything?

what do you guys think?

As far as I am aware you can use an AM3 processor in an AM3+ board. But you cant do it the other way around :( it just wont work at all

Intel I9-9900k (5Ghz) Asus ROG Maximus XI Formula | Corsair Vengeance 16GB DDR4-4133mhz | ASUS ROG Strix 2080Ti | EVGA Supernova G2 1050w 80+Gold | Samsung 950 Pro M.2 (512GB) + (1TB) | Full EK custom water loop |IN-WIN S-Frame (No. 263/500)

If the BIOS is up to date enough, it might support it.

Check the CPU support page for your board.

Error: 410

AM3+ CPU in AM3 motherboard usually works as long as the motherboard supports it. Check your motherboard's supported CPU list and look in to updating your BIOS. Sometimes it works even without a BIOS update.

You cannot, however, put an AM3 CPU in an AM3+ motherboard.

hi...

op-if a bios supports it, it will work, if it doesn't........it wont :o(what he^ said pretty much)

It should not fit. AM3 socket has 1 less pin then AM3+.

That is why you can put an AM3 cpu in an AM3+ socket but not the other way around.

Some of the mobo manufacturers took their AM3 boards, changed one hole and made it AM3+ compatible with a BIOS update. If the bios does not have an update for FX then the board will likely have that 1 pin still blocked.

i know that, thats why i am asking this but i thought that maybe this 1 pin will deactivated somehow

Some motherboards such as the Crosshair IV Formula have beta support for AM3+ cpu.

Check the supported cpu list of your motherboard.

ok no one person has answered his question lol! I think he is asking hypothetically if you could fit an am3+ cpu in an am3 board would it boot or just explode in his face... I can't answer your question cause i dont know but i am curious to see what you guys come up with.

It's been answered.

If the board has the pin blocked from AM3+ then it will bend 1 of his CPU pins and may render is cpu useless.

If the board does not have that single pin blocked it may fit but it still may not boot if the motherboard vendor did not provide a bios update.

If the pin in unblocked and it atleast has a beta bios for FX support then there are some AM3 motherboards that will work.

;P ok i though you all were talking about puttin an am3 cpu into am3+ with the drivers and shiz

It just wont work. Nothing would happen. Your fans would work and then nothing.

Its like the first time you built your PC, turned it on and nothing happened but the fans just spinning and you realised you forgot to plug in your CPU power. That nothing.

I believe they're just talking about a BIOS update. Like with the Z87's which will support the Haswell Refresh (4790k) by just doing a BIOS update.

AM3 boards just lack the hardware compatibility to socket a AM3+ processor in.
