First Build - Thoughts?

Is the Asus aftermarket cooler sufficient enough to cool the R9 290?  I've heard its had serious overheat problems, and I'd rather not deal with that.  I want this to last me through college.

I know it's like 70c to 80c but it will run good and last long. Also the aftermarket cooler from ASUS will make the card run cool and quiet.

It's plenty. The overheating problems are only relevant for the stock cooler.

So you guys think the R9 290 is the way to go instead of the GTX 780?  The R9 is cheaper, so that could cut 100 off my price point.

The 290 and 780 are neck and neck. Don't needlessly spend more for similar performance.

The 290x beat the hell out of the 780. The R9 290 is just a lower clock speed of the R9 290X.

What are your thoughts on things such as G-Sync and Direct X and GameStream etc?  Not worth the extra 100?

Gsync isn't worth investing in yet imo. Direct X isn't limited to Nvidia. Gamestream is only relevant if you are going to get an Nvidia Shield.

Noob question but, is Gsync Nvidia's version of Mantle?

Also, Mantle is good for BF4 (if you gonna play it). Just wait until Mantle will be available for more games :)

It seems like a lot of you are telling me to stray from the PSU that I have..... I might do that.  The EVGA one looks pretty nice imo.

Yeah..the one you picked is too expensive IMO. You won't need 860W to power your system, even if you SLI/Crossfire/OC it.
