Stop Suggesting IPS monitors for gaming.

creativename

People, stop suggesting IPS panels for gaming. 90% of you who do this only do it because Linus likes IPS. A decent TN panel is alw always superior to an IPS panel for gaming, and that "get a korean IPS monitor on ebay and overclock to 120hz" is a stuoid suggestion. Overclocked IPS panrls produce worse colors than a TN panel at 120hz, and IPS is way too slow for gaming. Please stop suggesting IPS monitors for gaming, especially the cheap ones. High end IPS panels have decent input lag, but the cheap ones are terrible.

here are some facts

if i show you 2 monitors, an IPS panel with 5ms delay, or a TN panel with 1ms, you cant tell the difference.

also there is alot more delay with your mouse, keyboard and GPU / CPU working togheter

those 4ms wont even come close to matering...

a milisecond is 1 * 10 ^-3 second or 0.001 second, thats 300 to 400 times shorter then closing and opening your eyes as fast as possible

Maybe if you want the fastest of the fastest of response times you could pick a high refresh rate TN panel, but for any other sorts of gaming, plus desktop work and watching videos, the IPS panel will most likely look better.

I havent really had experience with a Korean panel, and personally wouldn't recommend one to anyone who doesn't like to make a gamble, but my IPS screen is really nice and i haven't had any problem with playing games. I think the whole "GAMERZ NEED 10000000000hz MONITORS TO SNIPE PEOPLE 1000000x FASTER" is getting blown out of proportion.

It's only a matter of preference. If you like TN, go with TN, if other likes IPS, he should go with IPS.

Playing Skyrim and even Daggerfall on a TN panel is noticeably different from an IPS panel. Not every gamer plays BF4/ COD/ CS:GO... therefore suggestion should be pertinent to usage.

You see, I might have to agree with you that we were using Linus's opinion, but I have personally used multiple TN and IPS displays for gaming. If you can tell the difference in 4ms of lag, be my guest to use TN panels. I can't. However, accurate color reproduction and viewing angles are qualities which I can show my grandmother, and she can tell the difference.

Why is IPS too slow for gaming...? With a VS247 (2ms TN) and a H236HL (5ms IPS) I can hardly feel the difference dragging my mouse from one screen to the other. Ghosting is no worse on the IPS. The VS247 is only a 60HZ panel, but it is most definitely a "decent TN panel."

Also, H236HL's are pretty darn cheap. The input lag is hardly even THERE. Either way, this is all opinion based. I don't know why you hate on others suggestions. I game on these monitors just fine. :)

144Hz TN vs 60Hz IPS. Night and day for gaming. I got both side by side.

That's not even considering lightboost.

I bought my vg248qe specifically for gaming though. High refresh and gsync are enough for me to overlook the shortcomings in picture quality and lower resolution. For general desktop use, 1440p IPS is hard to beat.

If you think 4ms is the reason you lost in a game might as well also get Razer's "2mm shorter activation point" mechanical keyboard cause clearly those are the small details holding your pro career.

Linus has been very clear in his recommendation of IPS panels and the reasoning behind his recommendation. I've owned TN panels for several years and switched over to IPS displays in 2008 with my Dell Ultrasharp. IPS displays, from a quality manufacturer, will provide you with highly noticeable color reproduction differences vs. a TN panel. From a pure numbers perspective most TN panels can represent 70% of Adobe RGB color gamut while IPS displays can represent close to, or even exceeding 100%. The result is plain and simple: richer colors. Not sure about you but I'd rather experience a game with vivid color reproduction than on a dull TN panel.

In terms of the point you might be trying to make - response time - I've been gaming on a S-PVA panel and now H-IPS panel for years and have had experienced no degradation in my playing style or experience as a result. The only downside to my particular setup with an S-PVA and H-IPS panel would be the heat - the heat the Dell Ultrasharp monitors give off are insane.

It really depends on the type of gamer. Most of what I do at my computer is gaming, but I prefer IPS because I'm all about exploration and immersiveness. For a competitive FPS gamer, however, I would suggest a TN panel. I can see how you might get annoyed though. I get similarly annoyed when any thread of any kind in the air and water cooling forums is answered with "Gentle Typhoons."

No I will not! Also my opinions were formed long before I joined this forum and continue to be molded as I lean new things. The best is relative and is for each person to decide.

I have a friend running a cheap lg IPS pannel, he does just as well as i do with my TN pannel. I would hardly say that IPS is to slow for gaming.

When i game i want to get Fully immersed in a fictional world. IPS makes these worlds look more beautiful and alive and real. So for me IPS>TN for gaming. My IPS panel has 5ms input lag according to official specs. I don't know whether that's the accurate figure but I'm happy with it because i can't feel the input lag even in games like CS. So it's fast enough for me. I don't see the point of spending money on high end VGAs so that i can turn my graphics settings upto ultra and then limiting that graphical Quality by looking at the inferior colors of a TN panel.

biggest difference between them in color and viewing angles. TN never matches IPS on viewing angles but a mid range or high end tn can match a low end entry level IPS monitor on color.

Everyone has a different opinion and I think you creating this post is actually quite immature.  Because, saying to stop recommending a product when they are for two different types of people  is immature in my opinion.  I dont mean to offend anyone here but a TN pannel and a IPS panel, for gaming.  Whats the difference?  What does it mean to you?  Its like saying "stop recommending mx brown keyboards for gaming, Because Reds are more quick and not as much force is needed!"

I mean, its a very custom thing.  I like cherry MX browns for gaming.  Someone else might not, but I do.  And a 60hz IPS monitor is no different in performance compared to a 60hz TN panel, and if someone doesn't care about 120hz.  What is the big deal?  I dont understand.  I've never used IPS I'll give you that, but I know well enough for gaming its very dependant on the person and what they prefer.  Theres no right or wrong option.

Theres no right or wrong option in this.  Both work fine, both work great for gaming imo.
