Windows 8.1 product key

I was trying out Ubuntu but accidentally formatted my hard drive and lost my windows 8.1 product key now I want to go back is their any way to search my motherboard for the product key

is this a dell (etc) pc

or did you build it your self  ?

are we talking about a desktop or a laptop? usually laptop oem windows key is somewhere near the back of the ext shell.

 

i dont think windows 8 key is stuck to a motherboard on a desktop.

wow! in that case i'm afraid we can do nothing , you should've backed it up before hand , formating the hard drive means you will overwrite previous data with new one. unless you have bought it directly from microsoft & registered it via an email id you have , you got a chance of recovering it that way.But, if you got it someotherway, then you're screwed.
