US puts up cease and desist order against 3-D gun files

TGBSeth

"After releasing a video showing off their latest 3-D printed gun creation, the “Liberator”, the U.S. State Department issued a cease a desist order to the founder of Defense Distributed founder Cody Wilson.  Wilson had released a video showing a working 3-D gun and had included the source files for the gun on the Defense Distributed website."

What do you think?  Should source files for 3-D printed guns be available, or are they a danger to the public?

“Those who surrender freedom for security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one.” - Benjamin Franklin

An idea should never be made illegal. Make the act of printing a gun illegal but don't try to control the information.

As a chemical engineer I know how to make some really terrible things. That knowledge should not be controlled by the government. Using it for bad purposes should be.

I kinda expected this from the moment the put up the files on the internets for everyone to download. It was only a matter of time lol. Well as for how I feel; despite the fact that I'm from a country that has never allowed any of our citizens to own a firearm, I feel this is a pointless thing to do. People have already downloaded it and once something is placed on the net it'll never disappear.

I don't know what to think, I think it might have been in the best interest for the government to step in, only because, you know as well as I do, some dumb person will get their hands on this and go on a shooting rampage, sad but it would happen and the guns are not traceable which is even more dangerous, The stupidity of a few result in the government stepping in.

This guy makes 3-D guns and becomes rich off of it, while hundreds of maybe thousands would be killed with no trace of evidence, bad notion their.

Not sure, maybe he was or is doing it now, but I would think that if you rented a 3-D printing machine, for $3000 a month, you would want some of that money back.

He ought to have a business plan, yes. But I think at least the plans were on the web for free. Maybe he has sponsors?

Not quit sure, I remember last month watching a video of him making 3-D printing asualt rifle grips, I think he wanted to make it so everyone knew how to make one, but not sure if he was talking about, you needing your own 3-D printing machine, or if he would do it for you if asked?

With the current gun laws in the US and how guns work they are all essentially untraceable to begin with. Shows like csi don't really represent how guns and forensics work. I own multiple guns, at any time I can buy a new barrel for one of my guns and you cant match fired bullets to that gun any more. So essentially my guns are untraceable despite them being registered to me in one of the most controlling states in the US. And that's ignoring the fact that for less than $500 I can buy a throw away gun in any major city.

To be honest the person who put the information up was really stupid, granted, the act of using it for bad things is bad.

But use your brain for god's sake, it's untraceable and lethal, do you think terrorists/whatever who has access to these files will give a shit if their actions are bad? No.

Uploading the source files have simply made it easier for them to smuggle a lethal firing weapon beyond gantries.

The issue is that in countries outside the USA, guns are not as much of an issue (mainly European countries) and some of those countries do not even have guns readily available.

So, in a country where most people do not have guns, there are laws against them, and police officers are not even armed, the fact that an everyday criminal can privately make a gun is slightly concerning for people in other countries.  That's why the files were taken down due to "international" laws not US law.

Yeah, so it gives even more reason why they should have been taken down as it was. There is just no way to justify that stupid act of uploading those kinds of files for god knows what could have/has already been done.
