I have heard bad things about those speakers though.... it might not be the cable http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=295323

Just got some cheap cable and it sounds better. Might put some of those front vent deals in since there is little bass. Speaking of new wire...

I got some cheap speaker wire, and now I just have to get a wire to use my PC's audio with the stereo. Speaking of stereo, this gives great stereo effect.

I use lamp wire :D

because I just had it laying around, works just fine, I don't hear any distortion. cable is cable, shouldn't do any different really.

As we're getting onto speakers, here is my speaker rig, which is connected to my PC that sits at my desk just to the right of it. Sorry for picture quality.

The DAC used in this set up is the Musical Fidelity V-DAC with V-PSU, the amp is a Roksan Kandy KA1Liii.

Speakers are Magnepan MMGs, with a REL Quake Sub hidden behind the right one.

No.

In my case, yes. The 3 channel and surround went from sounding like it was being played at an insanely low bitrate to crystal clear.

Here's a video to give you an idea of the size of these speakers (the two hard drives on the floor are the standard 3.5" ones). So as you can see, I'm right in the middle. The stereo effect these give is surreal. Movies are incredible.

Oh btw you're suppose to cut the speaker wire and get the sleeving off of the ends you need. That's why it comes in 50ft rolls xD You don't need 2 of them.

For $3 each? Why not. And I knew that, but I might want to move things around eventually so that's why I didn't cut them half way through.

Oh, I'm not suggesting your experience is inaccurate. There's details you haven't covered which may be a very reasonable explanation, but there's pretty much no difference between a "power cable" and a "speaker cable" that are the same gauge and strand number.

This was my dorm room up until a couple of months ago.

Now that I'm back home I moved the Polk's into the living room and let my dad use them.

Might as well...

IMG_1941_zpsf44d62f3.jpg

On top of the desk. A pair of Harman/Kardon laptop speakers, 3W each. I think they originally came with a new purchase of HP laptops, but I got it at a store clearance sale, for about $7

IMG_1958_zpsb895470a.jpg

Below the desk. Fiio E10 for external sound solution, plugged to HE400. For internal, I just use onboard (VIA chip). 35W local-made speaker-sub set. It was actually a 2.1 system, bought it at $17. Now that I've used the H/K as front pair, I use the sub, and one of the satellites for Center channel. The other one, on the left of the picture, is not used. I tried hooking 2 satellites, both as Center, but it's just too loud, so I only use 1. So it's a $24 2/1/1 system. Currently quite happy with it.

Could've been better, I know, but I use headphone most of the times anyway.

*don't mind the clutters and dirt. I enjoy living like a pig....

What did you make them out of?

Ceramic tiles, pieces from a paper pallet and some glue. Not very pretty but they work and the cost of materials was zero since I got everything from work for free :). I tried finding some commercially available stands but you'd be surprised how hard it's to find small speaker stands for desktop speakers.

I think they look great, give them a spray in some nice paint, or some plastidip and they'd look pretty professional.

EDIT - Possible improvements you could make acoustically could be to mass load the tubes with kiln dired sand, or if you want to be fancy some of those crystals speaker stand manufacturers make. You could also find rubber feet for the bottom and to go under the speakers to absorb some vibration.

I forgot to mention that I did put some sand in the tubes to add some weight and I also put some rubber feet on the bottom. The speakers themselves are also on rubber stands that came with the speakers.

I've thought about painting the stands but I've never just gotten around to doing it :).
