Description : Some of you might know me from the early days of build log section with "Phenomenon". Apparently I'm still not satisfied with it, and now I've moved for the classic look, simplicity, and full aluminium build. This would be my long haul PC which would last me for years to come, I used the best components I can get or buy without having my wallet cry. In the end I am very satisfied with the result yet the maintenance is easy and simple, very suitable for a guy like me who will have a new project called "Family" or "Wife" as some of you might know ;) , soon. May I present my latest creation PROJECT BLANK

APOLLO

Thread URL : http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/75887-apollo-2-cpu-lga1366-server-inwin-pp689-by-alpenwasser/

Description : OK, OK, I know, it's not the prettiest thing in the world. It doesn't even have a painted interior! But still, there's lots of goodness here I think. Cable management! Completely custom drive bays with place for tons of HDDs! Dual CPUs! Loads of fans! But yes, of course this build is about functionality above all else. In any case (huehue), for those who don't know it yet, it's our new home server, used for my personal files, my dad's business data and our media library (and some experimentation with virtual machines). Currently at 29 TB raw storage capacity, it still has 11 free HDD bays at the moment for expansion. I needed a case with space for lots of HDDs for future expandability, but didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars on hotswap cages, so I took out the stock drive assembly and made a completely custom one with the awesome help from one of our neighbours.
More info in build log, for those who are into that sort of thing. :)

No money now ==> saving up

I have the same issue, trust me (college student). Patience and persistence

are a must for me, otherwise I'd never get anything done. I mean, HELIOS has

been going on forever (like, several years), mostly because I need to save up

money to finish it. I will finish it at some point, but it'll take a while yet. So yes,

patience and persistence.

EDIT:

Try again, until it's right. Same thing: Patience and persistence. ;)

i am a universitystudent, too. i save the money instead of spending it on things i dont really need. still got my 2009 i7 in my rig -  because it does the job. the noctuas come with 6 years of warranty -  so the will stick around some years. i think the things over and over and try to make investments in rigs that can last about 3-5 years. by that time i saved up enough money to build the next rig =)

Yeah, same here. I might spend quite a bit of money on computers, but

I'm very frugal in the rest of my life and save up a lot of money.

And let's be honest: CPUs haven't exactly taken huge leaps in performance

in the last few years. Unless you really need every last but of computing

power or are doing something where single-thread powerformance must be

top-of-the-line, I see no reason to switch to something newer TBH.

The Westmere Xeons in my main rig (not APOLLO, HELIOS, still not done) are

pretty old by usual PC standards, but they're still easily powerful enough

for most things one can throw at them.

Same goes for the rest of the CPs in our household: Two Sandy Bridge

CPUs (i7 2600k and i5 2500) and one Haswell, those will last for quite

a few more years until they need to be replaced, as will the Westmere

Xeons in APOLLO.

TBH, I'm actually tempted to do another LGA1366 build (if I had the

money, which I don't), just because I love the X58 platform so much.

Put a hexacore in there and you'll be good for most things you might

want to do.

Yeah, same here, they still command pretty impressive prices. Goes

to show just how good they actually are I suppose.

Well, one must prioritize. My car is currently out of service

because I don't really need it at the moment (bought it with

the money I made in the military before going to university).

Description : Hi,

Some already know me with previous build logs in this forum, you already know i love white case and build, i dont change this in this build, this one is my personal gaming build, i tried to make less compromise on aesthetics and Hardware specially on GPUs and when i saw white GPU pcb and white waterblock, the planning begins, most of the job for this buils are for the planning , painting and sleeving,

The hard tubing was not so easy to achived, specially because all passtrought on the floor

I hope you will enjoy this one,
