UPDATE:

This morning (the next day) I've decided to remove the Swiftech H220 from my system, and re-install the Thermaltake Frio that I was using before. This is to ensure that my CPU did not get damaged from the overheating and that my Windows installation did not get corrupted.

After the swap was completed, I decided to examine the Swiftech H220 a little more carefully.

Tilting the H220 kit around, I didn't hear any sound of "flowing water" that I was hearing before. At this point I am thinking... "oh god, did all the coolant evaporate or something?!"

I place the radiator/reservoir  on top of a table, and the CPU block on my lap -- so that the radiator/reservoir is at the highest point.

I unscrewed the fill-port cap. What I saw next scare the SH!T out of me.

Pictures are a thousand words. Sorry, the pictures were taken at high resolution...so for if I need to send them to NCIX and/or Swiftech regarding about my two failure instances. Without further ado, Here you go.

Tilting the radiator to get the coolant flowing / moving...and more of the white particles showed up!!

Can ANYONE please explain what is this white substance??!!?

only "white" in the system is the ceramic washers/bearing:

coolant looks contaminated other than the flecks. looks like another support email

to bryan/support: bryan@swiftech.com and NCIX to let them aware that more

problems exist with your replacement. bryan says he checks each RMA kit before

shipping, but since you are dealing at the retail level, it is still a random issue.

I have already contacted Bryan over at Swiftech.

I am thinking of calling NCIX directly tomorrow, as it is Sunday today, and discuss with them about the issue. I plan to send them an e-mail with the photos of the white particles in the coolant. Hopefully, I can speak with somebody in management or something, so they could possibly

  • Provide me a refund
  • Store credit for a future purchase
  • Replacement unit of something else of similar price value (i.e. Corsair H100i, Cooler Master Glacer 240L, etc)
  • Whatever else possible

At this point I am beginning to lose hope in the H220, and am beginning to doubt myself if water-cooling was a good idea -- if it is better to stick with my old, metal chunk,  dependable, Thermaltake Frio.

But god dammit! I'm damn sure my FX-8350 can be overclocked further!

According to the CPU Overclocking Database of our forum members, my FX-8350 looks like to be one of the better ones!!

i hate preaching, but a simple thermaltake water extreme 2.0 with crap fans can

hold a 1.488v FX-8350 on silent (1200rpm) at 74° and 1.525v at 2000rpm at 72°

says ASUS AI Suite which is well within the delta with no throttling. vacuum motor

sounds of the SP120 deffo lowers the temps by 6° more, but the loudness was

racking.

the innovative idea of swiftech is right-on, but the deployment and implementation

is far from retail worthy. and seems another member is having pre-mature noises

in another thread, as well. http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/157100-first-aio-swiftech-h220-too-loud/

my guess would be that if he tested it before sending the replacement, it could get damaged during shipping maybe, maybe a hard nudge from the delivery people and some ceramic part got cracked/shattered before even getting to you

It seems that NCIX now realize this is a common issue.

The last time I checked NCIX's website on the Swiftech H220 it didn't have, "NCIX covers 3 years manufacture warranty from the day of purchase for Swiftech H220" , but now it does.

There's no way Bryan over at Swiftech could be testing them as I was getting it dealt with by NCIX -- as it was still well within the 30-days guaranteed period.

NCIX.com warrants product(s) to be in good working condition and free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of one (1) year for OEM packages, and for thirty (30) days for RETAIL packages, from the original Invoice date unless otherwise restricted below or by the manufacturer's own warranty policy. Defective returns and warranty service will be replaced, exchanged or repaired at NCIX.com's sole discretion, and based on vendor's policy.

  • My first unit was ordered on April 27, 2014.
  • I had the unit in my possession later in the week, but I didn't get a chance to test to H220 until the May 4, 2014. (And the reason being? My occupation as an Electronics Engineering Technician for the Canadian Navy / D.N.D.)
  • An RMA was created with NCIX immediately on May 4, 2014, after what had happened (white electrical smoke, burnt plastic, etc).
  • The RMA was approved the morning next day, May 5, 2014.
  • At 3:11pm of May 10, 2014, I called the Tech Service of one of the store branches located in Richmond, BC regarding about my RMA process. They looked into it, and even told me the RMA was approved by management. All I had to do was send the defective unit back to the RMA department, and it should be hassle-free.
  • I sent the unit back to NCIX after work on May 13, 2014.
  • According to the tracking information, NCIX received my package (the defective H220) at 9:19am on May 14, 2014.
  • An e-mail was sent to me on May 15, 2014, indicating the replacement unit had been shipped. From the tracking information provided, it was indeed picked up by Purolator at 5:55pm on that day.
  • The replacement unit was sent back to me and an attempted delivery was done by Purolator at ~12:00pm on May 16, 2014...but I was still at work at the time.
  • I picked up the package from Purolator after work on May 20, 2014. The day before, May 19, 2014, was a statutory holiday (Victoria Day).
  • I didn't have a chance to install the second H220 until the evening of May 22, 2014.
  • Between May 22 and May 24, the total amount of operating time was no longer than a few hours -- the system had yet to be put under heavy stress (i.e. gaming, Prime95, 3D Mark 2013, benchmark runs, etc).
  • I was out with my family most of the day (shopping) on May 24, 2014, until I got home at about 6:00pm that day. I had purchased 4L of distilled water while I was out, planning to top the coolant up, and to also add a little bit of dish soap. I was experiencing the common rapid ticking noise coming from my pump, and the day before (May 23), Bryan over a Swiftech suggested adding a few drops of dish soap to "quiet down [my] pump."
  • That Saturday evening...is when I discovered the pump on the replacement unit had failed.
  • And...we are here today, Sunday, May 25, 2014...

Well, I got on the phone with NCIX this afternoon. I explained to them about my situation, and having two Swiftech H220's pump fail on me within the 30-day guaranteed from defect/failure time period.

They were perfectly happy to give me Store Credit for a future purchase than to send me another replacement H220. Plus, they are providing free shipping for me to ship the *second* defective H220, and free shipping on my next purchase.

It was hassle-free. All it took was ~20 minutes on the phone and speaking to them in a well civilized manner -- no yelling or cussing necessary.

  • 4 months later...

Just got my replacement after joining the white smoke club.  Looks like they have a new OEM pump??  It appears similiar to the Glacier Master 240L except swiftech has included a modular connector.

hope it will serve you well

i gave up on it, first the pump noise, that got solved and then the pump died and took my 2 cpu fan headers with it, at least those headers still read and deliver rpm to fans, so it's just power that got effed up

waiting for the kraken to be released here

Just heard back from Brian, they've actually gone ahead and upgraded the h220 to include the new mcp30 pump that they're using on the h220x. I think an expanded loop comparison video is in order:)

Hope this works out for you, looks like either the pump failed and drew to much power or the wires where not thick enough for the wattage pulled?

Seems like that was probably the reason for a few of the issues, the new pump unit has dedicated sata power.
