Favorite Cherry MX Switch

Blues definitely, I love my Blackwidow 2013 which is my first mech. keyboard. It's really not as bad as people say it is, they really stepped it up when they made the 2013 version, it's not crappy glossy plastic like the 2012 version. It's a pretty solid keyboard.

It is pretty much the same keyboard  just not glossy  :D

I have the normal Widow because I didn't want led keys and I love mine.

I voted brown, but if i could I would get a keyboard with red switches and a keaboard with blue switches, because the click of the blues annoys me while gaming, but for typing it is so wonderful, for now i have to settle on the compromise, MX browns.

At least the compromise is a good one.  The Ducky Brown and CM QuickFire TK Brown feel equally as good.

Black is now easily my favourite.  Used blue for a while, but the tactile feeling in them left something to be desired.  Probably the same reason why i do not like buckling spring switches.

Yeah, though I prefer Red for gaming, Black just feels better.....like tighter control when gaming (I don't know how to define it). I don't understand why Black and Red are so hated. I use three mech KB's, one's Red, one's Brown and one's Blue.....for typing, it's Blue. But for gaming, I prefer Red, Black and Brown.....Blue just doesn't feel right to me.

I do like Blacks too but for strict gaming it doesn't do anything for me the Red doesn't already do.  I like all the switch types.  Can't speak for Green though as I've never tried them.

All the experience I've had with mechanical is about 2 minutes each with Blues, Browns, Reds, and Blacks in Micro Center, typing the quick brown fox over and over.

From that, I think I like Browns best.  Blues are great to type on, but I'm not a huge fan of the click, and the feeling of the actuation and release points being further apart is awkward feeling at times (especially with repeated button presses, feels kinda like a cheapo double-click effect).  Browns do feel slightly less springy, but are pretty much as great for typing, and don't have the noise, or the double-clickyness, for lack of a better term.   :P

Reds are okay-ish, I could live with them.  I'm used to bottoming out on a membrane keyboard so lack of feedback isn't a big deal.  They're just kinda mushy.  I can see the rapid button pressing advantage for gamers, but I feel it'd be tough to train your fingers to toggle across the actuation point repeatedly and accurately with minimal movement.

Blacks are AWFUL haha, super super mushy.  The linearity mixed with the increased resistance makes me feel like I'm typing on wet sand.  Might be better for gaming though.

So for me, Brown>Blue>Red>Decent Membrane>Black>Crappy Membrane

I wish Cherry MX Clears were common.  I feel like I would like them.  Browns are a bit light.

I don't understand why Black and Red are so hated.

I think it's because the situations for which Reds and Blacks are advantageous (rapid button pressing) are few and far between.  In how many games does one actually press the same key multiple times in succession on a regular basis?  Any rapid firing is usually on the mouse.

Blues and Browns feel much better when moving across the entire keyboard, which is what you're doing on it most of the time.  For those who don't want to have multiple keyboards, blues or browns are more logical choices.

But yeah, they don't need to be hated.  (I know I just said Blacks are awful haha, but I haven't played games on them, so I don't really know.)

I've only ever used a keyboard with reds so I'll have to go for that by default. It's worked fine so far. I am looking to try a keyboard with blues though since a lot of people have recommended them.

  • 1 month later...

I'd prefer you only vote if you have used all the switch types for at least a month each like I have, because if you have not used all the switches for a extended period of time, you're pretty much just clicking the one you own.

I've tried a good chunk of them red blues and browns. Blacks interest me though haven't had a chance to toy with them. I use browns I like the tactile feedback and the non clickyness experienced with blues while still holding onto the typist experience and gaming.

I've always used Blue ones since I heard about mechanical keyboards, wich is like two years ago, I tried every mainstream MX switches for a period of 2 weeks before buying my first keyboard and I only really liked the Blue ones, the reds are my least favorite ones, the browns are ok, the blacks are good, I could buy a keyboard with these, even though I already have 3 keyboards, and they're all blues.

I've used the Ducky 9087G2 Pro LE Brown and Clears for a couple months now, and it's definitely my favourite board. Uses Cherry MX Browns on all the alphanumerals & arrow keys, and Cherry MX Clears for everything else. It's great having stiffer modifier keys on Shift/Ctrl/Alt/Tab/Spacebar when gaming, so you don't accidentally actuate them while resting your hand on the WASD cluster.

Add MX Clear option please! :D

Think of Cherry MX Clears as stiffer browns. They also have a more defined "bump" when you actuate the switch, and it just feels a lot less mushy than browns. (Some people don't like MX Browns because it feels like rubber domes with a slight bump).

Cherry MX Browns are considered light switches, which actuate at (45cN), and are tactile, while

Cherry MX Clears are considered medium stiff switches, which actuate at (55cN) and are also tactile but have a more defined bump when pressing the key.

And for reference,

Cherry MX Black: Medium stiff (60cN), linear

Cherry MX Blue: Light (50cN), clicky

Cherry MX Red: Light (45cN), linear

Cherry MX Blue, Red, and Browns all use the same spring, hence the reason why Reds and Browns have the same actuation force. Blues are a tad stiffer because of it's two piece design in the switch, which requires a tad bit more force to actuate it.

hmm interesting. I really do like the mush sometimes with the browns kind of keeps the noise down a bit. I also like it because it relaxes my hand a bit when I'm typing really fast. Fastest I've been able to get is 122 WPM with my G710+ from logitech

Having a stiffer switch on (non clicky switch) would actually make it sound quieter :P

Here's a direct quote from the Deskthority Wiki page:

Similar to the Cherry MX Brown, it has a tactile bump before the activation point. The tactile bump is more pronounced than a Cherry MX Brown but not as sharp as most rubber domes and Topre switches. It is longer and peaks higher, at around 65 cN.

There is a dip at the activation point (55 cN), below which resistance increases sharply up to 100 cN at the bottom. Typists who are not used to the switch may feel this tiring. However, proponents of the switch claim that the high resistance cushions the stroke helping you to avoid bottoming out, and that would be beneficial to the fingers in the long term.

Because of the size of the tactile bump, it has the most friction of all Cherry MX switches.

well I do have o rings with my browns the 710+ comes with them. I do like the idea though of clears. The linear ones I really didn't like much so that would probably push the reds and blacks off the table. And blues are just to noisey for me so that would kill off blues and greens.
