Does the ps4 controller output dolby surround ?

Hey guys, ive been looking at headsets that were pc / ps4 compatible, an thought "couldn't i use almost anything with the aux jack in the controller". I then realized that it may only do stereo over dolby surround, so thats what i want to know , does it output dolby surround?

No, the PS4 controller only offers 2-channel audio output. However, keep in mind that you only have two ears. You only need two audio drivers for headphones - any headphones that advertise 'true' surround or anything like that are just using marketing gimmicks to hide their shortcomings.

You only need dolby surround when running things like 5.1 and 7.1 systems, that means the PS4 can distinguish the different speakers and send the correct audio to each speaker (rears, fronts, centre, sub)

 

headphones only have 2 speakers, therefore stereo is all you need (left, right)

In most cases they are software surround sound done through processing, in others they are a combination of smaller drivers resulting in a "surround sound" effect. In most cases though you end up with a poor representation of audio quality when compared to two dedicated large drivers.

Gimmicks. Anything with multiple drivers in a single cup is a gimmick, plain & simple. Any decent set of stereo headphones + virtual surround sound software will do a better job.

 

The reason is that when you hear sound in 3d it is because of the way your brain is interpreting slight differences in what each ear hears. In the real world the shape of your head, the shape of your ears & the distance between your ears all play a factor in the slight differences heard by each ear.

 

In virtual surround this is simulated by applying a head-related transfer function (HRTF) to the sound in an attempt to simulate this effect. With headphones that have multiple drivers per ear you miss out on all that, relying only on the position of the tiny drivers in relation to your ear which doesn't do anywhere near as good of a job. 

 

On top of them sucking at reproducing surround sound they also suck at reproducing any sound. Reason being is instead of having a single, large high-quality driver you have 5 or so little crappy ones.

I love virtual barbershop. I wish general sound processing in games gave that true surround effect over two channels because that's something I really miss when I have to game with headphones.

but i like to play fps games so surround is better for me, so is there anyway to get dolby surround in a headset

Although sound cards are pretty much anathema here at LTT if you really want virtual surround sound they're kinda worth it for that IMO. 

 

Here's a video showing all the different virtual surround sound options. I personally prefer CMSS-3D over all the other ones. All the other solutions sound like youre inside a room or something because of the reverb:

 

 

Still better off getting a nice pair of stereo headphones & something like a creative card with CMSS-3d or an asus Xonar sound card with dolby headphone instead of buying a headset with all that built in. Headsets just tend to be overpriced & lower quality than you would get if you bought a pair of headphones & a cheap clip-on microphone.

Im not sure you understand. Surround sound only works properly when you are using more than 2 speakers, so that sound from behind comes from speakers situated phyiscally behind you, sound from the front left for example comes from the front left speaker, and so forth

 

Headphones only have 2 speakers, however a proper stereo image will still give the illusion of surround sound. using stereo headphones I still never really struggle to pinoint enemies, the difference is slight at best

You cant do that through through headphones -  5.1 literally means 5 speakers, 1 subwoofer,  - headphones that say this on are just simulating it, but the PS4 controller cant do this - you either need to connect a surround sound headset to the back of the console, or stick to normal headphones plugged in the controller

ok im fine with somthing that just simulates it and i will prob go with some astros or something for it and thanks for helping clearing that up to me
