Valve Releases Voglperf. Adds Benchmarking To SteamOS and Steam On Linux

Voglperf is a quick Valve tool for benchmarking Linux OpenGL games that comes down to just spewing frame information (FPS, frame time and min/max values) every second. That data can then be plotted, etc. Voglperf doesn't integrate any test automation but just dumps the frame data for whatever OpenGL game/application is loaded by it. Voglperf is supported on SteamOS and works with Steam on Linux.

Until now it was not possible to benchmark games on Steam for Linux. But after launch of this, we can expect to see Linux benchmarks on Linux Hardware sites like Phoronix.com

Good shit.

On a related note I do visit this phoronix site daily. This Michael Larabel guy keeps it updated well and deserves credit for that. But he really needs to work on his presentation, he tends to use small fonts and not-so-great graphs/charts. Also he prefers to use synthetic benchmarks. Doesn't help that there are no other sites doing serious linux benchmarking...

V  = Valve

ogl= OpenGL

perf = Performance

Voglperf sounds like some sort of kinky german porn genre. Why not Steam bench or something? Who knows.

Still good news I'm sure performance enthusiasts will now seek to at least dual boot Steam OS even if they're so afraid of the oh-so-scarey-communist-OS better known as Linux.

Because Steam bench wouldn't be correct in my opinion. This is just a debugger/FPS tool for Linux and Steam bench sounds like something that benchmarks all Steam games. This does only Linux games.

Linux is more libertarian or anarchist really

And so GabeN has told us to march forthith unto the Land of Holy welding our swords of mice, shields of keyboards, and helmets of Oculus Rifts where we shall reclaim it-which is rightfully ours-from the PUNY Console Peasants from whom armed only with mere controllers we shall decimate in all forms of battle and we shall dominate even in their most ridiculous tradition and infatuation of CoD. Yes, my brothers- sisters and trans sexuals too- we shall destroy the inferior of races with our might and majesty. And if any Peasants wish to join us they must speak now or forever perish. -Ancient Speech from a Leader of Old, Book of Murratri section 2

A mighty necromancer.

The stone cannot know why the chisel cleaves it; the iron cannot know why the fire scorches it. When thy life is cleft and scorched, when death and despair leap at thee, beat not thy breast and curse thy evil fate, but thank the Builder for the trials that shape thee.
