Mini PCIe eGPU

Josh55

Hey,

I've heard about those EGPU's which allow you to connect a PC grade grapics card onto a Laptop with a PCIe Slot.

Ive found a such module which looks like this:

PE4H-PM3N-ver2.4.jpg

I saw that the Intel NUC-Kit D34010WYK - Intel Next Unit Of Computing - with Intel Core i5-4250U has a such port and wondered if I could connect a 280x or a 770 with its full capacity on there

I've heard that those slots are limited but I'd like to know if I could connect a high grade gpu to it

Even if you could connect something like a 770 to the port something like an i3 wouldn't be able to utilize it properly and it would bottleneck hard.

How would it bottleneck? Which aspects and how? Please explain further.

well the only reason I can see to use this to add a GPU to something like a NUC is so you can game, the one the OP listed in particular has a low power 1.7Ghz dual core that would bottleneck the hell out of pretty much anything in a game.

You will need an external psu for that graphics card..

Well I dont exactly know if it would bottleneck bf4 that much but if you say it will I don't know. I thought more about the limitations with the external card which may throttle down the speed.

Now if you see it from the CPU perspective do you think it will really impact that hard on the performance?

Of course it would severely affect the GPU, it's a low power low clocked dual core. Intel's single core performance is good but it's not magic, the adapter itself might not be that bad seeing as even the most power GPU's can't even max out a x4 PCIe connection so how much of an effect the adapter itself would have on the GPU would depend on the bandwidth of the mini PCIe connection. As I said before though the major limiting factor would be the CPU itself.

I believe mini pci-e is only 1x, so you would be getting reduced performance from the card coupled with the probably low performance of the CPU in such  a tiny PC

something like thunderbolt though might work some of the NUC models have it

like this sort of thing

Would only work running windows, drivers im not sure about should work as normal - but I have seen a few CES videos of external thunderbolt graphics cages specifically designed for graphics cards

Should work though - thunderbolt is just PCI-e over copper cable basically
