Do i need to do a bios update or is the motherboard bad?

trainergames

Ok i have an asus m2n-sli deluxe motherboard, i friend gave it to me it was still in the anti static bag.

Well i did a trade on craigslist to get a cpu(phemon x4 9550) and ram(6gb ddr2 800mhz) for it,but when i went to test them they did not work, all the fans ,and lights would come on,but the screen would stay black, but the screen also would not go in to powersaving mode, and i would nt get any beep codes.

I tried with out the ram and the same thing happened,i went and barrowed a 5600+ from my nephew's pc in the hopes that it would work and i could use it to do a bios update, but it did not work,i then tried my nephew's ram,and video card to make sure, and it still did the same thing as with the other cpu.

here is the cpu support list http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M2NSLI_Deluxe/#support_CPU

Also i have been talking to a guy on the asus website, cause the guy who gave it to me gave me the wrong box,and i have been trying to find out with him what bios verison it has,it could be as late as 1604,which supports the 5600+,but it also could be as early as 0307,which does not support the 5600+yet.

Have you or have you not updated the Bios? I couldnt understang if you flashed it with your nephews parts because later on you say that you are trying to find the bios version with the guy that sold you the board.

Why dont you just download and flash the latest BIOS from Asus website?

I want to but the board won't boot(my cpu or his cpu, nither works),i was trying to find out the bios verison with a guy on the asus fourms, and unless the mobo is shot, which i don't know how to find out.

I may have to some how find an early am2 cpu to try and boot it with.

If there is another way to tell if the board is bad,let me know cause i would hate to spend the money on a am2 cpu just to find out it won't work, cause i have very little extra money right now.

take your cpu and ram and try it in the kids machine if it works then the motherboard has issues. sounds to me like yer mate gave you a duff board...

btw you can test for a dead cpu, turn the monitor on and wait for nosignal (you pc will likley have tyo be turned off completely at the wall as low level standby current in the pc is nough to tell the monitor its there so wont produce a no signal message.

anyways 1s you see it. time it till the monitor goes into standby.

again turn the monitor on and wait for no signal now as soon as you see it turn the pc on. if the monitor immediately jumps into standby then the cpu is dead (doesnt work for badly fitted cpu's they have to be in the socket correctly). when i say imediatly it should happen as soon as you hit the power button. if it doesnt and takes the normal amount of time then the problem is likely with your motherboard.

Did you remember to plug in the 4-pin ATX12V connector on the motherboard?

A sieve may not hold water, but it will hold another sieve.

Reset the BIOS?

(Either clear/reset the BIOS using the onboard jumper, or get into the BIOS and "load Defaults").

It sounds as if the MB is the trouble..Its reason for failure may be from a bad BIOS flash..Sorry. There was a warning about EZflash on boards prior to 0307. The serial number of the MB will tell the folks at ASUS what BIOS the board shipped with..See if you can get in touch with their support staff..

The serial number should be on a sticker attached somewhere on the MB..

Your best effort is the easiest thing to give to someone else..

I talked with a mod on the asus forums and i posted the serial number he said that according the the date code in it that the board was built in september of 07,and he said that meant it shipped with bios verison 1102.

Well it is below the 1502 version needed for the CPU that you have..but the 5600+ CPU should have given you a POST..the board may be bricked. You could pull the PSU and remove the CMOS battery for about 15 min..

Your best effort is the easiest thing to give to someone else..
