$1000 AUD work/gaming build to last 2-3 years

So I'm considering buying a build for regular work and gaming once a while. Though it will be used for gaming more frequently once my studies are over (2 years). Would this build be sufficient to last 2-3 years of gaming at medium settings  at 1080p. Also would an i3 be better for everyday use

Nope, maybe low settings in 2-3 years... maybe... Imagine how a 550 Ti performs in modern games, not very well. :/

I'd suggest the below build, you can add an SSD later if need be.

I have an old hardrive

this is definitely what I would get if I were you (with the rationale as to why):

PCPartPicker part list: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/3hPfY

CPU: Intel Core i3-4130 3.4GHz Dual-Core Processor  ($135.00 @ Mwave Australia) (cheap intel CPU that will perform better than the AMD FX series while also helping you pay less on your electricity bill, probably at least 10$ a year in savings from getting the CPU due to high electricity costs. The AMD CPU might bottleneck the GPU a bit, this will not. It's sad to say but there is no point in getting AMD CPUs unless you want an APU)
Motherboard: ASRock H81M-ITX Mini ITX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($83.00 @ CPL Online) (really cheap board. It's pretty basic but has all the stuff you'd want. Only small drawback is no front panel usb 3 connector so you'll have to deal with usb 2 speeds if you plug in something to the front of your case, but you still get USB 3 ports on the back)
Memory: Corsair 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory  ($48.00 @ Mwave Australia) (really cheap memory. It's one stick so if you ever want to upgrade you can buy another one for 40$. Even 4GB is enough for most games unless you also have 30 windows open in the background while gaming)
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk  ($108.00 @ CPL Online) (you could do without the SSD, but I would get one just because it's a hassle to get an SSD and clone the drives later on so I would just install windows from the get go on this and keep your old hard drive as a secondary storage drive)
Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Video Card  ($199.00 @ CPL Online) (same price as the 750ti from MSI, but it's shorter which is extremely important for the case I am recommending. The MSI will not fit while this one will fit. It's also a better card all around because it has a power connector which will really allow you to overclock it a lot more compared to the MSI version. The 750ti is an overclocking beast GPU so it's really worth it)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (OEM) (64-bit)  ($115.00 @ CPL Online) (same)
Other: Corsair CX430 PSU (on pccasegear) ($69.00) (cheaper than the CX500 and will be plenty for your build. Even while heavy gaming your computer shouldn't use more than 180W)
Other: Cooler Master Elite 110 ITX Case (on pccasegear) ($49.00) (cheap case that looks great and most importantly is really small. You can seriously put this in a backpack and play at your friend's house. Linus did a video on this case)
Total: $806.00
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

Price ends up at 800$, which is 200$ less than your build. The only  compromise made here was the 4GB of RAM instead of 8GB, other than that it's even an upgrade with a better CPU, better case (imo 200r is kind of outdated), better SSD, and better graphics card. What's also awesome is that this build is super portable and yuo can just carry it around in your house easily or bring it to a friend's house for a LAN party.

I can make a suggested regular atx or micro atx build for you, but that would kind of defeat the point of getting a 750 ti IMO.

PS: pcpartpicker AU seems to have some problems with parts that exist not showing up so I had to search for some of the parts directly on pc case gear.

This is what I would get for $1000 dollars. You could change the case if you wish and you said you have a hard drive but this build does not include an OS. Also the R9 280x is $70 off so you might want to get that. Also this should last for years :)

CPU: Intel Core i5 4460 | GPU: XFX r9 280x DD BLACK OC EDITION | RAM: 8gb Kingston HyperX Fury 1600Mhz | Mobo: Gigabyte h97n-WIFI | PSU: EVGA 600B | Case: Cooler Master Elite 120 | Cooler: Stock intel | SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 120gb | Storage: WD 150 gb

CPU: Intel Core i7 4710MQ | GPU: NVIDIA Geforce GTX 850M | RAM: 8gb Corsair 1600Mhz | Mobo: Metabox WA50SJ Motherboard | Case: Metabox WA50SJ case | Cooler: Stock | SSD: Sandisk 256gb

Best purchase this year, bcuz forza
