Facebook To Buy Oculus Rift For $2 Billion

Recommended Posts

I'm going to have to put on my raincoat to survive the avalanche of vitriol coming my way but....

Called it! I knew this VR stuff was nothing but a trend, a fluff, a bubble, just another stupid gimmick for the casual crowd. I know lots of you, Linus and Luke included, were very exited about the prospect of VR but it was destined to end up in casuals land like all gimmicks. The fact that Sony is trying to get into should have given you a hint but this is a not so subtle indicator that the interest behind this is mass-appeal and fleeting.

Kudos to Oculus they made a pretty damn good buck on this and Facebook will turn this into another super fast bubble like Farmville or the Wii and it will be completely forgotten within 6 years or so, like Zyna, like King games, like the Wii, like all other gimmick based, short lived fads.

Facebook hasn't messed up anything yet ... why is everyone so negative ? ... Okay ... I would rather have seen google buying ocilus and integrate it with glass

I'm just not a fan of the fact that big companies buy all the small to become greater and not letting a chance to smaller companies

Facebook hasn't messed up anything yet

Except Facebook itself. In case you use it, can you tell me when was the last time you used it for something social that is not Candy Crush or other game related thing?

I did a double take to make sure this wasn't the onion. This ruins my entire week. I could understand Oculus being bought by a larger company to ensure its survival but WHY FACEBOOK!!! Rift is first and foremost a gaming device, this makes no sense. I was actually going to buy one, not anymore.

wow guys, way to represent the internet as NOT a bunch of kneejerk spastics.
John Carmak is still on the team and none of the original staff has been layed off yet, not to mention the fact that Oculus has been scrambling for funding through its whole development.
Now they can appeal to the whole board of Facebook investors and Facebook has never been a bad company in terms of technology, they just suck at privacy which as we all know we can easily control ourselves (hotspot shield anyone?)

Don't stop purchasing Oculus products because then VR really will die, just keep being loud about your concerns, Investors hate angry mobs.

Well, there goes any excitement I ever had for Oculus Rift.

I hope Valve will release their own VR headset now.

Not to mention, why only 2 billion? I mean, come on, Facebook bought an app for 19 billion!

I wonder if Oculus could still screw FB and not sell the company?:D That would be so epic, would bring them a lot of buyers just because of the publicity, would be a very good trick!

This thought just occurred to me, what do the Kickstarter backers think of this?

I imagine "Fuck Kickstarter" Hopefully people will realize they're being used by scam artists and stop funding this types of projects.
