Facebook To Buy Oculus Rift For $2 Billion

Gunzkewl

Linus and Slick have been in the tech industry long enough to know how these sort of things work.

Stop becoming emotionally invested in brands and businesses.

Yeah please tell me how did you find out that I was emotionally invested in Oculus, and do you happen to know my address because you must know everything.

My facebook is just real life friends and work colleagues + the odd acquaintance

But I know what you are saying, i'll remain on the fence on this one till further developments come

I am not saying this is true for you but for a lot of people, when you go to school you have a lot of friends. As time goes by you realize they aren't the friends you thought they once were. Some people just don't hang out anymore, some people turn out to be dicks, some people you barely know but you thought you were friends because you hung out and got drunk together. Then time passes and you are suddenly left with a friends list full of people that are not not your friends but you certainly don't want to share everything with them. I'd like to know if someone has a kid but I don't really want to see pictures of the dinner they had last night. There is a level of openness that is acceptable but FB doesn't see such limits. It isn't in their best interest to have these limits.

Cant see the problem here remember oculus was not just about the rift guys

So facebook may of wanted another part of the company and you get it all bmw microsoft apple and many more companies have done this

The rift will have some money behind it now and a huge team of code writters behind them now so if the rift is your cuppa tea it may now be out for christmas

Giving fb a return keeping the money men happy

The problem is that they will focus more in advertising or integrating it to other stuff than using Oculus for gaming.

90% of the people here are completely overreacting.(Sorry but it's true)

1. It will still be gaming focused.

For the simple reason that the average person isn't willing to pay that much money for VR or for the hardware you need to drive it.

Most people have still a Dual Core with integrated graphics or a GT610...

Even Console gamer aren't willing to pay money for their own consoles.

2.People are hating on Facebook because of ads...

Like serious every internet page has adds.

This Forum has adds,YouTube has adds,Google Search has adds, as well as 99% of the internet.

3.Facebook hasn't messed up anything that they bought till this date.(Whats App and Instagram work still fine)

Not like Google that messed up most stuff they bought like YouTube.(Thanks for Google+ )

4.It's still the same exact team working on Oculus nothing has really changed.

If it lost its focus for gaming why is John Carmack still working on it?

The hating just destroys the image of Oculus.

Hate on it if they really mess it up.

Until than wait and see.

1. No news to reaffirm this. The only thing that we have right now is fuckerberg saying they want to use it to sell advertisement and products with it.

2. My internet hasn't had ANY ads anywhere since 2006.

3. Kinda hard to fuck up already shit services.

4. You guys talk about John Carmack like he's some sort of god like our lord or savior gaben. When was the last time John Carmack made a good game? He is a non factor in the oculus team.

Facebook leaving alone Oculus to do what it wants would be like Jerry Jones leaving along the Dallas Cowboys and letting real people manage that team ...... Jerry Jones doesn't do that!!!! Get it people?

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

Where are you getting that part of the screen will be covered with ads?

From Zuckerberg. He had a meeting with the shareholders and the things he brings up does not sound that promising. For example he said that there are plans on integrating ads into it further down the line. The meeting is available online if you want to listen. Skip to 29 minutes in to hear how he talks about leeching money out of it, with for example ads.

I really doubt there will be any forced integration like that, they've said you won't need to sign into facebook to use the device.

They didn't say they wouldn't require a Facebook login. Palmer said he would quit if they integrated it. That's not the same as saying they won't integrate it. Remember, Palmer is no longer in charge.

Reading it in text is one thing.. But to actually hear the words come out of his face is 10 times worse...

All of that was about "down the line", not right now. He was talking virtual goods, advertisements, but down the line later on. They wouldn't be intergrated into every single program, who would buy that?

It would more likely be focused around a facebook VR social network or Facebook VR platform in general, not the hardware itself.

Games themselves won't have an ad in the middle of the screen. Facebook services, sure they could do. Hell, any dev that wanted to could stick ads everywhere, but thats the case for any PC game.

To quote Palmer.

If I ever see ads on anything that I've already paid for, I'm done.
That is a developer decision, not our decision. If someone wants to sell a game with built-in ads, they will have to deal with the natural consequences.

It doesn't really matter what Palmer says. He is not the boss anymore. Zuckerberg is the boss and he says they plan on including ads in it. We don't know how much "down the line" is, but I don't want to support a company that will do something I am against just because "well they aren't doing it now, they just plan on doing it a few years from now". I do not trust Facebook at all by the way. I am definitly expecting the Oculus VR to have a gazillion backdoors and spyware in it. I won't touch it unless it is 100% open source which I doubt it will (don't want to expose how much data harvesting they are doing). If they prove me wrong and release all the firmware under an open source license, and they make the final product good then I will fully admit that I was wrong for not trusting them, and apologize. I think the chance of that happening is extremely small though.

Palmer seem to be in damage control mode. Of course he will try to sugarcoat that he sold out and betrayed the original backers.

Oculus can now go rot in the same hole as Whatsapp.

There will not be an OS for Occulus. It is a display. This is not a mobile platform.

If Facebook releases all that stuff which they might, it won't effect games. People have done things like this before, and I doubt it'll lead anywhere this time. When Facebook bought instagram it was still instagram. When google bought YouTube, they didnt change the content outright.

If I turn out to be wrong, I'm going to accept it.

I don't think there will be an OS for Oculus in the short time. But I wouldn't have predicted that Google would be the dominant force in Mobile OS before Smartphones became prevalent either.

I maintain that in the short term, Oculus will be fine for gaming. Except that game devs will drop support for the platform, because of the bias against Facebook.

Farming simulator in first person with VR would've been cool actually.
