Facebook To Buy Oculus Rift For $2 Billion

Gunzkewl

As long as Oculus VR remains separate of Facebook, there shouldn't be much to worry about. In fact, it gives Oculus the financial stability it needs to get a consumer version out sooner.

I just really hate to see startups with so much potential, like Oculus VR, get acquired by giant corporations.

I don't see how the purchase itself is proof that VR is a gimmick.

Yes you do, everybody here does. Mark himself said so let me quote it in case you forgot:

But this is just the start. After games, we're going to make Oculus a platform for many other experiences. Imagine enjoying a court side seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face -- just by putting on goggles in your home.

It is pretty easy to draw conclusion as to why Zuckerberg wants Oculus, it's no coincidence that the king and creator of the casual market wanted this "tech"

Yes, and pigs fly... In a buyout, the buyer makes the rules.

Sure they can have specific agreements but those are subjected to changes later on, if the INVESTOR believes they are heading the company into the wrong direction.

If FB is smart they will let them do their thing so they can cash in later on, when the final product will reach the market.

But im sure FB didn't acquire Oculus just as an investor. They are probably thinking of some VR Facebook shit, where instead of poking our friends on FB, we will make them a VR Blow job or something.

Smart move from Oculus, 2 billion for a company which is 3 years old. They hit the jack pot with this one.

Im sure it was "Who pays the most", otherwise they could easily find other investors.

And that's how things work in a capitalist world, money can change opinions; personal values; principles etc.

Google wants to be The Internet King

Facebook wants to know what colour your shit was so they can share it with your friends

The only good thing Microsoft did in the past time was their new Windows Logo

Yahoo is still trying to find out how spam filters work

Apple is selling you the same hardware with new, fancy covers since 5 years now, the sad thing is they are still making profit.

You're right, and as much as I would like to believe that Oculus wasn't blinded by Facebook's offer and that large sum of cash, I just can't. We were all hoping Oculus was headed in the right direction, and as cheesy as this sounds, they were the shining light in the pit of darkness that is VR. Now that this news has flooded the internet, I don't know what to expect of them anymore. It's sad, what money can do, and I don't want to see that in Oculus nor its products.

I really hope it's $2B cash, and not stock.

It's 400M cash and the rest in Facebook stock.

on its current trajectory occulus was going to have a slow burn by first being adopted by gaming nerds and the porn industry and then gradually mass market...

I REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY hope facebook stays out of the management of occulus and allows occulus to reach the masses quickly by doing sad and silly second life stlye facebook meeting rooms

Even if Oculus keeps working independently after the acquisition, I hate the fact that my money will go to Facebook  :(.

How do we fix this?

*Prays*

Dear NSA, I know you are reading this and I know we haven't been on the best of terms recently, but if you could find it in your heart to shut down Facebook (and possibly kill Mark Zuckerberg?) then return Oculus back to the people I would be very grateful.

Amen

Not that I was particularly excited about Oculus, I still need convincing that VR is anything other than a curiosity. But Facebook's new business strategy of buying / attempting to buy anything that is becoming popular is getting extremely frustrating. I wish more start ups had the balls not to sell out at the first opportunity.

I will never associate myself with Facebook. I will never use a product directly or indirectly owned by them.

RIP Oculus.

I don't see Facebook injecting money and pushing VR in the gaming direction.

Why not? What will they do with it? I doubt they're going to invent 3D facebook or something, of course they're going to do this.

How do you know this isn't Facebook entering the gaming race? I for one think they would be a great additional to it as they're a very successful company and I defy you to find anyone with access to internet who hasn't hear of them.
