Pirating games when you don't have a lot of money [discussion]

Jeroen1322

But if i work more i don't have time to play the games :P I know what you're saying and i understand why you think that but please act more mature, and friendly.. This post isn't about starting a flame war but to discus

.........................................

be more mature?

you're complaining that if you WORK MORE, you have less time to PLAY GAMES

and nothing I said was flaming - you're obviously looking for someone to justify your side. that's not discussion

if you can't understand that, then this whole thread is just a waste of everybody's time

I almost never have money to buy games, but I still NEVER pirate.

I bet you can see where my love of F2P came from.

Wargaming, SOE, Red5, thank you for being there for me! <3

Wether you play it or not while not buying it does not do any harm to society or economy.

Unless the devs are going bankrupt and are actually good.

I dont think someone who cant spell check should really be talking about the economy and as you dont seem to understand it either i'll give you another reason. Higher pirating rates gives devs less motivation to bring games to pc

Even those of you that pirate then buy thinking that wont harm PC you are wrong. The developers cant see that you bought the game after pirating it. All they see is one extra person who has stolen their product.

Why censor myself, if I have no money that isn't reserved for essential things (food/rent/ect) I will pirate things, if I have the money to pay for it or pay for some other non essential item I will choose between the two.

My steam library has 209 games in it so I have evidence to support this, games that I pirated and were good I've picked up on Steam at a later date.

Also when it comes to console games for instance,  people with less money tend to buy used games, I see this as the exact same as piracy in terms of profit to the developer so I'd pirate over buying used because it's free.

I guess if they are games that you're sure that you might not like but you wanna try them out, it's a good "excuse" for pirating the game.

If you really want to play online multiplayer and you know that you'll be spending lots of time with the game, like Battlefield 4 and the Assassin's Creed series, I guess it's better to buy the original game.

I buy all of my games except games from one company and one company alone: EA.

And it surprises me that no one has pointed out the small advantage to pirating, something I read off of Notch's blog. A pirate can also benefit agame by promoting said game, therefore earning more money for the dev in the long run, especially for indie devs who don't have the resources for large scale advertising. Say you pirate a game. You love the game, and tell all your friends how great this game is. Your friends go and buy the game, because they either aren't pirates or don't know how to pirate. Now you just earned that dev more money because you pirated the game. And now you want to play that game with friends but have to go online. Now you buy the game. Win win situation.

I rarely pirate a game. In such cases it's usually:

  • Very old - If I like the game and get it running with no problems, I may pick it up on somewhere like GOG, like I did with Dungeon Keeper
  • For a system I don't own
  • Games that I have given away to charity shops or friends/family and want to play again, though usually I'll see if I can pick it up cheap on Steam or something, and if it's close to a holiday I'll just wait for a sale
  • New games that I don't really have much of an interest in, if I like it I'll probably complete it and then buy it when it goes on sale on Steam or something. I admit there have been two games that I did do this to and enjoyed a lot but never ended up buying because I had no money during the sales. I'll probably pick them back up in the future though because I want to re-play them.
  • Games that don't have demos. There's no such thing as being overly cautious when it comes to PC games, especially when it's a port from consoles.
  • Early access games. Again, if I like it I buy it.
  • I'm too poor to afford the game at the moment. Again, if I like it I buy it.

I admit that I only buy those games on Sale, but it's very rare for me to buy any game for full price anyway. I also know that it seems like I pirate a lot of games, but I really don't do it a lot, and if it makes it sound any less awful I do own almost 400 games across Steam, Origin, Uplay, GOG, GMG, GFWLMP, Gamefly, Amazon, Physical Copies, Google Play, and Nintendo 3DS. That doesn't include any of the games that I've given away or duplicates either.

Wow you actually think you are good at deflecting  because you are too damn stupid to come up with a response. I answered why the PC community would be hurt by not paying.

You do realize that it is just as easy to Pirate a game and use it on Console (PS3, XBOX 360 and even Wii). Just go to craigslist look for someone to "Flash", "JTag" or even get a Xkey for your Console (Only saying this for Xbox 360 as I've never used ps3 but I know you can pirate games if you jailbreak it).  $20 to flash about $150-$500 for a JTAG and $60-90 for a Xkey. You then can Pirate a game, burn it to a disk with xbox backup creator, and img burner. After you have successfully burnt the game, put it in your console and BAM! You have a Free game that works as if it was just bought from a store. So Both ways this doesn't affect there motivation to put games onto the PC Platform. This is also how people mod Consoles.

But yeah, So the whole "Higher pirating rates gives devs less motivation to bring games to pc" is incorrect.

Fun Fact: Pirating, Modding, and burning games only takes about 6 hours (Depending on your internet speed to download the pirated game, but to burn it and all that it only takes about 1 hour).

Anyways, my rant Is over don't even think it was a rant.

OP. I do think that Pirating games isn't a good thing. I have done it (For console) but I was stupid then and didn't realize what trouble, and how unfair it is to the devs. They do put there hard work into it and DO deserve respect/some income from that. Otherwise its like a F2P game. Now COD on the other hand. Pirate away no "Hard" work put in there simple CTRL+C and CTRL+V for them.

When I was a child, I was into Transformers. My cousins had a lot of them and I would play with them whenever I visited them. Growing up, we didn't have a lot of money, so my Transformers collection consisted of just a few Mini Bots. Back then, I never did get any of the most popular ones like Optimus Prime, Soundwave, or Grimlock. Everytime I went to Kmart (they were super popular back in the day) I would browse the toy selection and wished I could have them.

Now jump into my adult years, I make a nice living and can afford to buy what I want. About ten years ago I got back into collecting Transformers toys and have bought almost all of the original G1 toys and still have them till this day.

OP, as a youngin' I know what its like to want things you cannot afford. I am not going to throw stones at you cause I was no angel back in my teens either. Just keep in mind that while you may not be making a lot of money now, keep working hard at your website or whatever you decide to do with your career, and eventually you will make enough money to support all your gaming needs.

As of now, there is really no need to play every single game that comes out, especially on release. With Steam sales, Green Man Gaming deals, Amazon, etc; you can put things on a wishlist and get them pretty cheap.

The rate of PC piracy is a hell of a lot higher than console, as its so easy. You dont need a modded console etc. Also on pc a developer/publisher can actually get numbers on how many people have  pirated the game. Devs have stated that one of the reasons they dont bring games to PC is because of piracy. You could argue they are just lying but thats just assuming they are lying.

i think that's what gets PC gamers called pirates.  "It's just a demo" or "ill buy it later".  If you can buy it later, buy it later.  Surely you can wait a few months.  It aint going to hurt and that way you aren't fueling the piracy "industry".  Well that's my opinion anyway.  Just don't do it, even if you will buy the game.

You dont have the money you dont play the game. Think about it this way I wanted the naos 7000 on massdrop but i dont have the money to buy it so i just take it and use it. Do you think thats ok?

Also since u choose south park just watch live streams then you dont have to buy it or even play it. This is a problem I have with live streams or videos of certain games. One of the frist was stanly patable where a friend watched some do every single outcome over a weeks time and thus no longer needed to play it.

you don't make enough money to buy the amount of games you want

you have the time to play all those games you pirate

use that time to make more money to buy the amount of games you want

/mindblown

if you have enough time to play through so many games, you can be doing something far more useful/productive with your time. pirating because you're poor is a stupid excuse

He probably shouldn't pirate games that he doesn't intend to buy, but you definitely don't decide what is or isn't productive for his life.

I did it that way because I'm an impulsive person. A game that holds my interests now, may not a few months down the line. If I play and enjoy the pirated version I feel obliged to buy it when it comes on sale. If I don't play it and then loose interest then I won't buy it at all.

If it werent for the warm confortable arms of piratebay when I grew up - I would NOT be the gamer I am today. In the age 10-16 I could not afford to buy games so I downloaded games like a maniac. I think I filled a 500GB HDD with ISOs, cracks and keygens.

Now, as soon as money started raining in I completely changed. From 18 years old and onwards, I have not downloaded a single game (unless the copy I legit purchased didn't work). I have in 4 years manage to repay what I stole by x4. The gaming market has profited from my 6 years as a pirate, and I am thankful for being able to pay legit today.

If you can't obtain a license properly don't use the product. It's that simple. Anything else is an excuse. There are plenty of other things to do. Stop being entitled thieves.

If I never were an 'entitled thief' I would never have bought the games I have today, not all pirates stay pirates forever. In some cases pirating does not have to be bad. Like with me: pirating games made my hobby flourish in a time where any other hobby could've come into the picture and replaced it, if it weren't for the easy, cheap way of maintaining it.

I would say, if you cannot afford it dont use it.

I can totally understand why certain people pirates, like having a demo of the game before buying. Do you have any other choice to demo the game when the publisher dont release a demo version? Yes, youtube, reviews can provide such thing but some people like to experience themselves before buying.

But in the case you simply cannot afford it, i would say save your money up and buy the game when you can afford one.

I get it, and don't disagree on a lot of points, ultimately whether or not it is a benefit doesn't make it okay to take and use something you don't have permission for.

My real issue is with people who try to claim they aren't stealing when pirating.

If I never were an 'entitled thief' I would never have bought the games I have today, not all pirates stay pirates forever. In some cases pirating does not have to be bad. I used to do the same thing thinking the same thing as you and then I stopped. Pirating is wrong and you shouldn't do it. I think that if you want a game just wait until you have the money to get it. If you can't get the game right away then so be it just wait. It won't kill you to have to wait a little while to play trust me I know as there are plenty of games I haven't been able to buy or I have and just haven't had time to play.
