MSI R7950 Twin Frozr III Fan Glitch

Go to solution Solved by bradscoolio,

Unfortunately it seems this issue is a manufacturing fault.

Found the same issue here: http://forums.aria.co.uk/showthread.php/123727-Fan-speed-100

and here: http://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=166687.0

Both drew the same conclusions. I'd advise calling the retailer and getting their advice on a RMA

Hi Guys, I have been looking around for quite some time and so far I've only found one forum post on this issue.

The problem is as soon as the card reaches around 60 degrees the fans go right up to 100%. There is no way you can override this through programs like MSI Afterburner or SpeedFan.

However, my card happens to be a nice overclocker (Able to get 1200 core and and 1500 mem with 1175 mV) and I was hoping there is a possible fix to this problem? Possibly flashing a BIOS.

However if you guys think it would be better to send back the card I am not that bothered. I have only had the had it a couple of weeks.

Thanks in advanced for any help :-)

Here is a nice tutorial in setting a fan curve in msi afterburner from a peep over at overclock.net

Hope this helps :)

*edit: woops, thanks lanesz. i read the "There is no way you can override this through programs like MSI Afterburner or SpeedFan" as if it was a question :P

@bradscoolio he said he can't do anything about it with programs, including MSI Afterburner

@OP I have this exact same problem, with the exact same graphics card. Its pissing me off like crazy. But look like I also have some other issues that you apparently dont. Thanks for those links, I ended up a massive chain from forum to forum but finally found something useful.

It seems that this problem can be fixed by taking of a diode on the back of the card, it is very small and can apparently be easily removed this a screwdriver.

MSI are still accepting the cards for RMA if you remove the diode. It seems that they are actually recommending people try it.

The diode is supposed to be a safety feature if the card overheats, but some of them were faulty causing the fans to ramp up early.

I feel confident enough to try it as most of the people who tried succeeded. I will update later if this works.

I did read this thread before I started mine, but as I didn't have the more serious issues, I decided to make a new one.

That's a very interesting ghetto fix :P
