Fan starting problem. (

Thomieboy

Hello,

I just received my 3 new Noctua ND-A14 ULN fans. I put them and put my 3-option selector switch on my Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 Case to 5 V and.. nothing. Ok, 7V.... Aaand Nothing.... Well a little kicking from the fan but no rotation. They only start at 12V and then you can go down to 5V to make them inaudible. At 12V they are quiet but not THAT quiet. At 5V they are really inaudible. But I don't want to but the switch to 12V and then back to 5V everytime I start my PC !

So, is there any fan controller or board etc.. to solve this problem by letting the fans spin up at 12V for a second or so and then go back to 5V after that? A 5.25 fan controller type thingy would be nice ! (Hope that it's not too expensive)

I maybe could solder something myself with a cheap µC and a mosfet or something, but I first want to know if there is something on the market for that.  (Otherwise I could bring it to the market...?   )(Kickstarter?)

All answers are apreciated! And thanks in advance   :D

~~ Sorry for bad English. I'm from Belgium. Thanks! Have a nice day!  ~~

seems odd but the typically conclusion is that there is something causing friction with the fan causing it to not to turn. remember physics, it takes more energy to get started than it does to maintain. but if it is doing it for all 3 there might be something else wrong. try plugging them into the mobo and see what happens.

On 5V not really, On 7V you can see them really trying to and maybe doing 3/4 rotation but it's not enough to start and on 12V they start really easy.

I did that. I atached 1 fan to it and it worked. It started up without a problem and was quiet. I then tought: "Ok, problem solved" And i atached the other 2 ones to the mobo and closed the case. But when pressing the start button, they behave like they would start on 7V or something. I plugged them back in to the case fan controller.

when attached to the mobo, fans will crank up to near full speed for a split moment. not sure why but they do. (could just be me) were as when attached to the controller they are getting the immediate voltage you want them so it may not be enough to get them going.

question: did they come with a low rpm adapter or something that you could be using?

(I  have never owned noctua fans. just basing everything off similar fan knowledge)

Yes those came with a LNA (low noise adapter), but i didn't use them.

I am waiting on someone more professional than me to chime in but that doesnt seem to be happening fast enough. so at this point I dont know what to tell you. I am using the same fan controller as you but I am using the stock fans that came with the case. I will be water cooling it and probably be switching out the fans for some other ones but that is probably another 5 months down the road. its a slow build.

Edit: if you have a volt meter you could check the 5-7-12v  and confirm they are out putting those voltage and double check the amperage.

I will try doing that tomorrow I think (11PM in Belgium right now). I hope someone will know a sort of fan controller that can do this. BTW are those Fractal stock fans not making a rumbling motor noise? Mine did...

nope. I had to double check they were even spinning at 12v. super quiet! I am not sure if they had some vibration to them because I had my main rig running at the time.

Weird, I even contacted FD for that and they send me 3 new ones.(Thumbs up for Fractal !) But same problem... I haven't had any luck with my build. (see al my previous posts). I'm just doomed in the PC world.  :(
