Monitor for my m18xr2 dilemma

ShadowCaptain

Hello guys and gals. my first post on the forum :) this might be a long one but i would appreciate anybody's advice, i just cant really choose.

So, my current monitor is a HP w2408h 1920x1200 24" display, i've had for absolutely ages. However it has terrible viewing angles, (even just sitting up straighter shifts colors) and its a little small for the desk im sat at.

I'm really thinking a move to 27" would benefit me greatly, my dilemma comes in what monitor would be the best option for me.

27" @ 2560x1440 IPS - would give me great viewing angles, more screen space when editing photos videos and general working, and a nice monitor for multitasking. Now, the problem is my only rig at present is an Alienware m18xr2 (i7 q3610qm, dual 7970m and 8gb 1600mhz ram) i manage most games at 1920x1200 (or at 1080P) perfectly fine on high an ultra, normally between 40 and 100 FPS depending on the game - was playing bioshock infinite today on ultra at 1920x1200 no AA at about 70 fps

do you think my laptop would push out games at 1440p? if not, would scaling 1080p on a 1440p display look ok  when gaming? would i notice the difference?

OR

do i go for a 1080p 27" monitor? this would be perfecty fine for gaming i feel, i could even get a 120hz + monitor for 3d or in the games i get 100fps plus to get buttery smooth visuals,

main problem is, all the hours i spend not gaming, id be going down to a lower resolution than i currently work at, but on an even bigger monitor. i will lose all my screen real estate

If you were in my shoes what would you do? - also as an aside, ive been researching into input lag on IPS panels, would i notice this increased lag on say a dell 2713hm?

im so confuzzled ><

I don't have your laptop, so I'm not sure how it will fare for 1440p gaming, but my laptop, Macbook Retina 15 inch, can not push 1440p gaming.  And 1080p scaling looks TERRIBLE in my opinion.

If you want to test whether or not you can stand scaling,

try scaling your 1920x1200 monitor to another resolution with your laptop.  see if you can stand it.
