Hackintosh - easy?

Go to solution Solved by Hikaru12,

Hackintosh works well if you follow TonyMac's guides to choosing hardware or pick parts from their selected builds. Avoid using the absolute newest video cards. Things will break over time so what I recommend is creating an image/clone of your settings once you've got everything working so you revert to it if something should go wrong.

As for laptops, they're more tricky to get a Hackintosh working because of their motherboards and drivers.

I don't own any apple products but my cousin has asked me some advice regarding a potential MacBook buy. She has an ipad, iphone and a few other apple products so she wanted a system that could work easily with her other products. She has looked at a MacBook but they are very expensive. I've told her that Ive heard about making a hackintosh but Im not sure how difficult it is and how well it works.

She is not a geek but she isn't stupid when it comes to tech. Is it very easy to make a hackintosh?

Yes and No. If you have all the correct hardware it's simple otherwise it can be much harder.

What hardware is needed? I just figured it was far cheaper to buy a laptop and make it a hackintosh instead of having to buy a MacBook.

Well, if you could give us some more information on what you've got to work with that would be great. like, does it have to be a laptop and what is the budget? :)

What he means is that it doesn't natively support a wide array of parts. So when building a hackingtosh you only buy verified components for your system. If you do this the rest of the process if very straight forward.

If all the parts in your build aren't supported its still do able but very complicated and may be not worth doing depending on how bad you want to run osx

I would advise against a hackintosh unless you love to bang your head on the desk. I have it running on my rig but even then I still have a problem I dont know how to fix. i just know a work around for it.

Hmm, thank you guys for the replies. If it was for myself, I would have no reservations. But Im not sure it would be smart to recommend that solution to her if its too much of a hassle.

Might look at finding her a cheap MacBook Air then.

Laptop and properly below 1100-1200 dollars.
