The truth about Noctua fans

Askew

Yep. My current fans are at 900rpm and keep my cpu at 4.6 under 80C during Prime95. I think at 900rpm GTs will be silent.

Oh yeah you'll be fine.  At around 900 they do make noise, but it's MUCH more pleasant than 900 RPM noctuas.

In the video, at 900 RPM they made 34.8 dBA, the nf-f12's at 900 RPM are 40 dBA

yes those are the Gentle Typhoon High Speed's they are a completely different fan. I have 2 of the 3000rpm ones in my ITX build.

They have a full range from like 600 rpm models, to like 4000 or some insane number like that.  I think it's like.. ap-11 ap-12 ap-13 ap-14 ap-15 then ap-45 and a bunch of other models.  I can find a chart, I may be able to find it gimme a few mins

There's a boat-load more too

7r5l5.png

I what is available I have actually used some since release in the US, 4 of the 1850rpm to be exact, they are in a Antec P183. I have never seen anything higher than 1850 but that doesnt mean they dont exist. The reason I asked was @TheNinjaNextDor said "I think ill get GTs. You would recommend the AP-45 2150 version?". Also the 3000, 4250, and 5400rpm models are different fans quite different. The Gentle Typhoon High Speed's took their time coming to the US as well, I actually only found them once Scythe USA died a year or so back. They have a the nice advantage of being able to be easily be converted to PWM as well. Oh and the 5400rp, models have been EOL for over a year now but if anyone finds some please let me know I would really like at least a pair of them.

You could even turn them up more, and get more performance with the same amount of air :P

One thing is, you'll have to run them at ~950-1000 rpm to get the same amount of airflow, but the thing is it's still going to be 5 DB quieter than the noctuas

So, the conclusion is that most people care about how their builds look too much to use Noctua fans most of the time. Noctua, get on it.

They are and are going to cost more but be better with likely the same designs.

Got my first Noctua back in 2008 when I built my original rig. Then it was rated surprisingly good in magazine review and price wasn't bad either. For U9B it was ~50€. That said it was my first aftermarket cooler and I was happy with it. I ran my rigs wihout sidewindow (they are under table anyway) so looks don't matter that much. When I looked for new cooler ram clearence was big point. I wanted full size ram, not LP ones. So getting U14S instead of Dark Rock 2 was easy choise.

I dislike them for their color scheme and won't ever buy them. But tbh. Scythe GTs don't look appealing either. It's a pain in the ass to find some good fans for a black/red build, which are silent, good looking and performing.

I currently run 140 mm bequiets, since they are freaking inaudible and very good performing. You can only start hearing the air woosh through at around 900 rpm.

BUT... they have an absolutley stupid mounting mechanism and frame! You can never really use them for radiators because they leak too much air. They're only good for air cooling radiators and airflow, which is why i will probably have to go with something like a Prolimatech MK-26 over a Kraken G10/ custom loop, once i get a GTX 870/880.

There are simply no fans that fill all requirements. I think a bequiets with proper frame and rubber isolation would be the best solution.

who cares...

they are just hipster fans. It wouldnt cost any more to make them a decent colour . Even if it did youre effectivly buying a $5 fan the make for $20 or less.

While I know their decent enough performers, I do not like the looks of them.

Windowed case - wouldn't buy them, prefer aesthetics.

Non-Windows case - might buy them, if not something else focused on silence.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

I've got four of them (2 NF-P12 & 2 NF-F12) in my build and I don't think they look too bad. I think the F12 could be more silent though as they have a hum that's quite audible. I'll also try different PWM fans (suggestions appreciated) as soon as I watercool my rig.

Well they aren't the quietist or the prettiest, but, this in the NH-U9B SE2 on an underclocked 8350 (Current and max) http://puu.sh/7ry8n.png That's with the ultra low noise adapters too.

you need to add another field asking if the owners are satisfied with their performance.  Cause I am not.  Linus made hyped Noctua's up way to much.  there are other fans out there that have the same or better noise to performance ratio (I'm only talking about when used on a rad, open air doesn't really matter to me) that aren't nearly as ugly.

I honestly like the way they look, they're rather unique. Though, it's not like it matters as much to me as I have them on my radiator, which in the TJ-11 is hidden at the bottom with my PSU.

plenty of ways to make fans look unique without making them a color that matches only 1 other component (sabertooth mobo)

it goes well with black and black/gold as well, or at least I think so. And please explain how to make them unique without a color change.

you can make them a color that matches most pc components

and here's a black and white fan that looks unique

I use noctua, but what I don't like is their color scheme. Sometimes, acutally most of the time, it doesn't go with the theme color of your Rig. But if you don't mind it then there's no problem.

Probably price would be another problem specially for some region that it is priced higher.

I like the performance of the Noctua fans, but the color scheme, I prefer dark or black. I think it would be cool if they manufacture a "Night Owl" or "Black Owl" type of fan.

The PC Enthusiast's rig is under construction.

I agree completely, he made them out to be like the god of fans, when there's many fans that outperform it with nearly twice as less noise.  I was extremely disappointed that I spent 200$ on noctuas, then after I watercooled I could still hear them clear as day over my GT's.  Wish I wouldn't of bought the noctuas in the first place, but then again how would I of learned if I didn't.

For the last question I would have said, its more than I am willing to spend to have airflow in my case.
