Used CPU - 1151 7th Gen

I have plans to use a used CPU. My question is, could a faulty CPU damage a motherboard or vice versa? Is it something that should be avoided? How should used CPUs be tested? Many thanks.

A faulty motherboard could damage the cpu, but I doubt a faulty CPU can damage a motherboard. Though frankly enough it's really uncommon for these things to happen. I don't see the reason behind going with 7th gen intel though, the CPU's are still too expensive for some reason. The 7700k is like 250$-300$, the 7700 is like 200$ and the i5 7400 goes for like 100$. It's a bad deal considering that you can get a i3 9100f for like 70-80$ and a cheap b/h series board for 50$-80$

A damaged CPU is not a source of power so it won't be able to damage a motherboard, but the motherboard supplies power to the CPU so it can definitely fry a CPU if it has a problem.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

It depends. He can sell his old cpu. I for excample sold a 6600k and bought a used 7700k for a total of 110 €.

yeah but it's still kinda bad value, when you can also sell the motherboard and ram and get a new Ryzen setup, break even or possibly make a profit, and end up with a better setup. The Ryzen 5 3600 is often significantly cheaper than a used i7 7700
