Weird Speaker Setups

G3R489

So I hoard tech, and I refuse to let anything go to waste.

When I was younger I decided to connect over 40 speakers together using Aux splitters and terrible cables. The sound quality was horrible.

This includes 3 surround sound systems, 10 portable speakers, 4 radios, 3 iPhone docks, a PA speaker, a Car Subwoofer, and a piano. I will only post videos if needed as everything I recorded at that time is so cringe.

So I want to hear if any of you guys have horrible/ weird/ cursed sound setups that are way better than my old one.

I used to love watching myth busters so much!!!

Genuinely though, unlike this

at full blast, the bass would go through you, as the PA speaker and Car Sub we’re not meant to be in a tiny room under a desk.

If you're looking for Jank you've found him, I'm the king of Jank

I used dual 12' car subs with cheap logitech 2.0 computer speakers next to my bed,
I've ripped drivers out of old speakers, wired them in parallel and literally hung the metal chassis off screws (that I put) in the wall next to my bed
I used a 15' car sub with BOSE 101 speakers hung off the side of my computer desk powered by a PA amp
I modified a Velodyne theatre sub with a broken driver by cutting a hole in it with a jigsaw big enough for an old 12' driver I had laying around and used it with the Bose 101s powered off the outputs of a Behringer Xenyx 802 with custom bookshelf speakers powered by a PA amp

Audio aside, I turned a poweredge 2950 (Gen 2) rack server into a custom watercooled, dual CPU gaming rig a few years back and did a build log of it on here. Using pond pumps,  hardware store vinyl tubing, Ebay Water blocks, radiator fluid and the cheapest $8 80mm radiators I could find.

I still use a cheap Panasonic 5.1 system in my bedroom, built custom center and rear speakers and use custom bookshelf speakers for the front speakers
When I have parties and whatnot I take those bookshelf speakers and run them off a 320WRMS power amp
My computer uses Tannoy Reveal 5A studio monitors
My TV uses Logitech Z506 surround system as though it were a 3.1 system and it sounds pretty good.

Weird systems? Systems a-plenty.

I've seen my fair share of weird shit from working in the LEP scene. Some PA systems are so jank I don't want to go near them.

There's some goldies on youtube aswell such as:

This one is probably my favourite.

I think one of jankiest things I've ever done was experiment with using just the woofer on my JBL M2's as a sort of awful subwoofer thing as a joke with my co-workers/students. Probably the worst subwoofer I've ever used, 1/10 would not listen again.

This was also fairly jank:

ME_Patch_.thumb.JPG.e4d291d0ad6089b36322f9e918d6bb25.JPG

Yes, that is a Monitor Engineers patch. Mostly inputs from DI boxes etc, split off to FOH and the ME with some direct sends thrown in for the performers monitors.

An absolute shit show of wires. Yes I ended up tidying it up a great deal.

LTT's Resident Porsche fanboy and nutjob Audiophile.

Main speaker setup is now;

Mini DSP SHD Studio -> 2x Mola Mola Tambaqui DAC's (fed by AES/EBU, one feeds the left sub and main, the other feeds the right side) -> 2x Neumann KH420 + 2x Neumann KH870

(Having a totally seperate DAC for each channel is game changing for sound quality)

The bass on that must blow your head off at full volume!   As Hank as that sounds, I genuinely love the sound of that!  As janky as it is, you’ve still given me speaker envy.

I’d love to see some photos if you have any!

Also the fact you are using a cinema sub that you’ve modified yourself, is amazing to me. And lowkey I’m now going to keep a look out on Gumtree (British second hand website) to see if I can ever find one.

Also you are like me, if I had more money and parts. I’ve been looking for a 2 CPU server (and actually a 4 at one point), so I’m definitely going to check out your build soon!

Also the other systems are pretty good too!!

I love that video on YT, I’ve personally taken a painting off the wall with my old setup (it was badly mounted), but that would be awesome if I could do that.

I’m ashamed to say it, but I had never heard of JBL M2’s before today, and I have to say, they look so sleek.  And I’ll keep that rating in mind if I ever decide to spend 6k on a PA speaker to use solely as a subwoofer. XD

Oh wow that’s a so jank, though if it ain’t broke. Atleast the wires even then were more tidy than the old wan-show setup.

That reasonably tidy for a analogue split. But compared to modern networked audio its a mess.

Haha, the M2 is a studio monitor, not a PA speaker. You probably could use it as a PA speaker, but I wouldn't.

Weirdest thing Ive donwe with my gear was chain my dac to feed 3 headphone amps and my speaker amp. I put one cheap pair of earbuds at the time a pair of vidos $2 chinese buds but is literally peak price to performance but had no sea,l so perfect so what I have to do. , with ksc 75 clip ons and my he 4xx the only heapdhone I own that had deep enough pads to take the ksc 75 and turned on my desk speakers micca rb 42 adn played music. not that I was expecting the experience to be awful aside from the comfort it was surprisingly fun. layering on music soundied wonky or awesome depending on the song. the micca rb 42's bassy nature helped as you could literally feel the bass and playing with the amps levels to find the perfect balance between everything was fun 10/10 would reccomend if you happen to have the gear for it and are bored as fuck

That’s A cool thing to try.

I like the sound of that, just having oddly distorted music. Could be quite good with some songs

with the right balance of volume they can blend with each other and mix pretty well especially if your just chaining thw source gear ensuring no noticable delay

Don't know if I have any pics of the rest but if I find any I'll send them to you.

Seriously, I can’t tell you how much I love this setup. Yeah the cables may be a bit of a mess, but your audio gear, amps and actually the whole purple scheme of your room look amazing.

The guitars on the side also look amazing.

That pc is also great, I bet that makes a huge racket at full, but with speakers like yours I bet you can’t even hear it.

Seriously, you have some great gear, and seeing it has made it worth making this topic. As this is exactly what I made this for.

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words,

I haven't used the server in years but I can confirm it sounded like a jet engine before I modded the heck out of it, lots and lots of soldering involved.... Bought it for $100 though so for the money it couldnt be beat.

I've only had my + the fiancee's bedroom done properly for a few weeks, But damn I need to change it already. Need some sort of accent colours.

Skadaa, Skadey, I cant spell fiancee

LTT's Resident Porsche fanboy and nutjob Audiophile.

Main speaker setup is now;

Most of my place looks like a generic IKEA showroom so the A E S T H E T I C [cringe] posters and abundance of RGB everywhere make it feel a lot more 'homey'.

Also helps me forget the terrible colour the walls are painted 😆.
