If you are among the Blessed and have a Micro Center nearby, this is a beastly deal and is making me strongly consider returning the B550 board I just picked up and skipping the 3700X upgrade.

Yeah, I have my B550M Steel Legend arriving today, but I don't have the $280 R7 3700X for it yet, just my old R5 1600.

If I go with the 9900K (which I already have on hold there), I have a motherboard, but it's ITX. I have a couple of ITX cases (Core V1 and QBX), but if I go with the QBX as I'd like to, I'd need a $120+ SFX PSU to go with it.

I'm leaning ever so slightly towards the 3700X because of the ability to jump to a 12C/24T Ryzen 9 3900X down the line, whereas the 9900K would leave me more or less stuck on that CPU forever. Plus, I could just keep running with the R5 1600 for now. I dunno. It's tempting.

I would just wait a few weeks for ryzen 5000 and get 5600x or whatever the fuck, it’s going to beat the 9900k in virtually every aspect afaik

Yeah, and there will be 0 of them available for an extremely inflated price.

You can't say for sure.

In 2-3 years you probably wanna get a DDR5 system. And 8 cores is plenty for 5 more years.

$300 is a very good price.

That’s not known as of yet, but it will probably be the truth.

I’m just convinced it’s gonna be another five years before we see consumer ddr5

No is in the horizon, 2022 probably. Zen 4 or 5. 5 Years is too long.

DDR4 official standard is stopping at 3200mhz.

I'm still going back and forth. If I get the i9, I have functionally the same chip as the 3700X, and you're right, I'm probably not going to need a 12-core chip between now and 2023. I'm not even convinced my 1070 is ready to go, tbqh, and my goal has shifted down from 3080 to early adopter 3070 to early adopter 3060 to idgaf let's see what the 3050 Ti can do.

If I go with the 3700X, I'm saving a few bucks on the CPU, sure, but I have to keep that $130 motherboard I just bought because the idea of simply letting a 3700X try to boot on a glitchy B450 POS with stone age VRMs terrifies me.

So basically, one of three things happens tomorrow:

  1. I go to Micro Center and pick up the 9900K
  2. I go to Micro Center and pick up the 3700X, against my better judgment
  3. I say screw it all and go buy my Subaru instead, even though that seems like a highly illogical solution to a $300 non-problem.

I went to MC to pick up the i9, talked myself back into the R7, then left with neither. If I'm to this level of just not being able to decide, it stands to reason that I don't actually have a clear use case in mind, I don't need this, and I'm better off waiting for the inevitable MC dump on the 3700X inventory once the Ryzen 5000 inventory has stabilized.

I didn't buy the Subaru either. Did test drive it though. The handling was disappointingly soft.

Haha, just wait for 5000, i'm sure there will be some price cuts for black friday.

I'm guessing since everyone wanna buy 5600x instead of 3700x, it's gonna get axed.

This is good info. What package and model did you test drive?

Crosstrek Sport. I took a second ride in one this weekend and was much more impressed with it. Also drove a Mazda CX-30 today—it’s a lifted Mazda 3 and feels like it. Drove a Hyundai Kona yesterday. Don’t waste your time.
