Will I benefit from 32GB of RAM?

I am buiding a new system and have the option to get CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 32GB for something around 120 buck (just about 30 buck more from 16GB of basically any other RAM out there), it sound like a sweet deal but I am not sure if I will benefit from that much system memory for general desktop computing.

I am a translator by trade and I do used a lot of specialised software  which run a bit heavier than your standard MS Wiord as well as having to open a lot of Chrome tabs and Windows, well, windows. Lately I also found that a lot of my program and Chrome closed on its own or frrozen solid and have to be forcibily closed but I don't know if that has something to do with system memory or just my SSD failing (I heavily bet the latter though as my SSD definiely have an issue and I planned to phase it out with this new build anyway.)

Anyway, 120 buck isn't a lot but I feel like I am potentially wasting my money for no reason here. I do game from time to time with my PC as well but I've never noticed more than 8GB of RAM usage in game anyway, so I am a little hesitant with this decision.

i've had 32GB for a few years now, but for the number of times i've used more than 16GB RAM by other means than just extreme negligence... it's been a debatable investment.

The only time 16GB wasn't enough for me was when I ran dedicated server of a "Space engineers" game.

Honestly I'd probably do it just because it's so cheap.

I hit the 16GB RAM buffer when I'm playing games and have all my tabs open. So I'm definitely going 32GB on my next build.

I run 64GB but that was solely due to the number of workshop items I have for Cities:Skylines.  Takes a LOT of RAM to load a save with all those assets.  Anything more than 16Gb for a pure gaming rig is a bit overkill.

Just get 32 so you never have to worry about running out of ram for the next 5 years.

Unless its a heavily modded game I rarely use over 12gb when gaming/discord/browser and couple tabs.  But if I have lots of tabs, and background items open, I approach 15+gb (but that's also because if Windows 10 doesn't have to, it wont clear the RAM of not needed data so its semi bloated when Im rocking 32gb)

Id do it simply (32gb) if I could afford it as even though you aren't saving money by spending MORE money on the extra RAM - should you ever need it you will have it.  Hell, get the 4x8gb kit and resell 2x8gb and pay even "less" for 2 of the 8gb sticks.

Like others mentioned, very case by case basis, and what your habits are.  If you think it's one of those "too good of a deal to pass up" then it might not be a bad idea, but that's subjective to you.  You can gauge your memory usage in Task Manager for Windows to see how much you're using when you're doing your daily routine for work.

To give context, I have to use at least 32GB for my work PC since I have a ton of browser tabs, reports, and apps open all at once.  Personal PC, I run 16GB (ITX Build) since it really only gets used for gaming and web surfing.

Agree with others. It's cheap, why not. Back in 2017 I paid $220 for a 16GB kit and now that's enough for 64. So you really don't have too much to lose.

Oh gods I paid $85 for 1x8gb 2133mhz DDR 4 at that time.  Didnt understand Ryzen and speeds just went with what was "cheapest" to get the slot populated to boot it up lol

well I do love game modding and often run a heavily modded game - still never see memory usage over 16 GB though (rarely more than 10 even)

I mean if you are strapped for cash and 120$ is something that is life changing at all then no just get 16gbs because you really won't notice the difference. If 120$ is something that you have just laying around and you don't lose sleep over it go for it and never have to worry about ram problems again. I have 32gbs and I rarely use it. It's just a nice to have knowing that I'm set for awhile.
