Is A FX-8350 Being Bottlenecked by a 970 chipset??

my pc has been acting strange on passmarks its got a cpu mark of 9370 i have posted the screen pic with the results. its not stable at all it lags alot even on windows on the internet and multitasking if i play a game it will judder for about 15 to 20 seconds and then will pick up and then be fine all the way through the game. The pc seems realy slow but the cpu is only on 1 to 5 % the only time it increases is if im either rendering or playing a game could it be that i aint got a 990fx chipset or i have chosen a bad configuration..

Its the CPU cooler you are using the thing thats bottlenecking your rig.

I have the same CPU, and as soon as it reaches 60c or 61c IT starts to downclock the modules to avoid overheating, because believe it generates a lot of heat.

Run prime 95 64 bits, and see you CPU ,load with a program like "hardware monitor" or "open hardware monitor", you'll see that you CPU will run a cycle of downclocking two cores, then the next 2, and the next 2.

Grab something like the beloved Coolermaster 212+ EVO, but I'd suggest going with something lilke a H100 or similar products.

I have problems keeping my CPU from throttling too xD, I asked my nearest retailer to get a Corsair H110 cooler for my CPU.

Also you GPU is kind of weak, you can't run current games maxed out with that HD7770.

While not necessarily needed you may want to change your ram, I would have gone with 8Gigs, or at least a 1866Mhz kit, The FX8350 was made to run with memory of higher bandwidth.

PSU and HDD are fine.

you could be running out of ram or the vrm on that board might not be up to the job, or the cooler you have might not be up to the job.

nice case by the way  :D

The motherboard only bottlenecks where it can be overclocked. My FX-8350, on an ASRock 970 Extreme4, doesn't bottleneck, it easily reaches 100% in Skyrim.

RAM is likely a bottleneck in some cases as 8GB is rather standard for a PC, 4GB is half that obviously.

The CPU cooler an issue? As long as it's any better than the stock cooler, how could it be an issue?

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

Disable turbo core. This is a common bug on almost all Gigabyte AM3+ mobos: aam kicks in too soon so it trottles the heck out of your cpu. 4 Gb of memory is actully fine if you don't keep chrome running when gaming. But first check your Tmpin temps, most of the times, with these CPUs, a good cooler for the last owned CPU is not a good cooler anymore. The stock cooler should do the job with it,s 7400 rpm fan...(aldought you need a helicopter headphones for that)

If the temps are high, try to undervolt the CPU, 4ghs 1.25v and llc regular and the temps will lower by at least 10 degreeds. Don,t rush to buy ram and expensive cooler. Don't overclock/overvolt your cpu on that mobo, you would't believe what kind of stress fx 8core does to your vrm at 1.4v and more. Also update to latest bios available. The 970 chipset performs exactly the same as 990fx, but is has less pcie lanes=cannot do CF and SLI.

Uhm theres something wrong with your system.. Lagging when you're just browsing isnt normal. Best to try running HCImemtest to test if your ram is stable in a different system, try your psu as well in a different system with folding@home and the GPU. If that worked fine, your board should be replaced.

Well its not the chipset that is limitating you.

i have a 970 board aswell but i have no issues, but this is because my board the Asus M5A97 EVO R2.0, has a 6+2 powerphase and digi vrm. Same as the Asus M5A99FX pro R2.0 has.

The problem with your motherboard, is that it only has a 4+1 powerphase and not the best quality vrm´s. So i am personaly don't look strange that the board has some overheating voltage throttle issues.

By the way this is a well known issue with all gigabyte AM3+ boards, also the bios is kind a crap.

I personaly never recommend them.

For an FX 8 core cpu, i mostly have a list of boards thats i personaly recommend.

1 Asus crosshair V Formula Z    8+2 powerphase digi vrm

2 Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 8+2 powerphase digi vrm

3 Asrock 990FX Extreme 9      12+2 powerphase digi vrm

4 Asrock 990FX Fatal1ty pro   12+2 powerphase digi vrm

5 Asrock 990Fx Fatal1ty killer   8+2 powerphase digi vrm

6 Asus M5A99FX pro R2.0        6+2 powerphase digi vrm

7 Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0        6+2 powerphase digi vrm (only 20 pci-e 2.0 lanes)

8 Asus M5A97 EVO R2.0          6+2 powerphase digi vrm

Why no gigabyte or msi, well gigabyte have cost me to much headaces in the past, i just dont trust theire am3+ boards anymore.

Msi am3+ boards have not realy the best bios for overclocking, if you wanne get passed 4.8, the bios of the GD80 just dont allow you to bump up the voltage enough, msi´s 970 boards same story as the gigabyte overheating issues, wenn using 8cores. same counts for the Asrock 970 boards aswel as the 990FX extreme 3.

Thease low end boards are fine for an FX4300 or FX6300.  but for 8 core cpu´s i would just recommend the boards i listed above. :)

Some people may disagree about my statement towards gigabyte cause of theire new GA-990FXA-UD3 rev4.0.They clamed that they solved all thermal issues..

But i still read alot of issues with this particular board aswell.

Grtz Sintezza.

The only thing the 970 really keep you from doing/having, is the ability to OC more and of course some of the bells and whistles of the 990FX chipset.

Theres nothing up with the chipset blabla there's just something wrong with his system. Lagging when browsing definitely sounds like a hardware issue. Instead of recommending a board start to diagnose.

i have sussed the problem i had a sandisk ssd for windows 7 worked fine but i had a 1tb hdd for storage and game witch was on its last legs the response was terrible now i have got 2 2tb hdd raid 0 ( i no not reliable but its good for what i am doing) and it plays all games extreamly well quick load times with 340 mb read and 300 write but my ssd says 450 read 110 write :S wen i use folding at home my cpu never goes over 65 degrees  but my psu is pumping out hot hair northbridge i cant even touch it and the the mosfet cooler is that hot aswell. Is the mobo not able able to suply the cpu with enough power. it aint the best thing to overclock either if i put it to 4.3 it blue screens fails to boot and if i put it to 4.24 on prime 95 every core fails apart from 1 within 5 seconds i tried loads of ways to overclock it.

a faulty drive is offcourse allways, bad. But about the motherboard, i just told you that it will overheat like crazy, wenn you wanne overclock. the vreg design of those boards are just not designed for overclocking. they overheat like crazy. :)

If you realy wanne go into decent stable extreme overclocking, its better to grab a Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 mobo for example, these are rock sollid boards, and overclock like a champ. or if you can afford, the Asus crosshair V Formula Z or the Asrock 990FX Extreme 9

Decrease the (motherboard) NB voltage to 1v if and the NB heatsinc will be just warm and not hot. Also place the stock cooler's fan at the vrm and plig it to the other 4 pin header. (cut and add wires if it.'s too short. It will be very quite in idle and will ramp up a bit when needed by default.

Phenoms are stable with mobo nb voltage at minimum on ud3=almost cold heatsinc.

My FX is stable at 0.970v mobo nb.
