AMD Radeon RX 6000 Specifications Revealed / Leaked from 2 Separate Locations: Up to 5120-Cores & 2.5GHz Clock Speeds

A Redditor who trawled through the deep mines of macOS Big Sur code has uncovered preliminary specs for AMD’s upcoming Navi 21, Navi 22, and Navi 23 GPUs. Listed clearly within macOS code is the number of compute units each GPU will have: Navi 21 will have 80, Navi 22 will have 40, and Navi 23 will have 32. Assuming that each compute unit corresponds to sixty-four shaders, the GPUs will have 5120, 2560, and 2048 shaders respectively. The clock speeds for each GPU are a little more ill-defined, and we’ll explain why in a second, but the driver lists speeds from 2 GHz to 2.5 GHz. There’s also a mention of a Navi 31 GPU with 80 compute units; 5120 shaders; but there’s no other info on that chip yet – that one’s still a year from release.

 

On the website, Newegg, there is an insider blog post. Whoever wrote it, is listing a table including Radeon RX 6700 XT, 6800 XT and 6900 XT specifications. The next AMD flagship would be named RX 6900 XT and would get 5,120 shading processors tied to a base clock speed of 1,500 MHz. This card gets 16 GB of gddr6 memory based on a 256-bit memory bus. So that means 512 GB/s of memory bandwidth (equal to the bandwidth of the RTX 3070). The TDP listed is 300 watts. According to rumors, the product performance sits between the RTX 3070 and the 3080. The Radeon RX 6700 XT that would get GB gddr6 and thus a 192-bit memory bus with a power consumption of 200 watts. The base clock speed is listed at of 1,500 MHz, actually for all three cards listed. This card would get 3840 shading processors. The smallest model is the Radeon RX 6700 XT has 2,560 cores (similar to RX 5700 XT) and sees a power consumption at 150 watts.

It would appear we are getting a clearer view on the Navi 21-based GPU (known as, Sienna Cichlid). Navi 21 will supposedly pack up to 80 CUs (equates to 5120 stream processors, "Cores"). There's two variants however: Navi 21a @ 2050MHz, and also Navi 21b @ up to 2200MHz. The faster Navi 21b @ 2200MHz would result in performance somewhere around 22 TFLOPs; meaning on paper, it's slower than an RTX 3080 @ about 30 TLFOPs. TFLOPs performance doesn't always translate as faster howbeit, and AMD might have IPC gains too (due to RDNA 2). The Radeon RX 6000-series is going to be on the 7nm node (TSMC), while NVIDIA's 3000-series are on Samsung 8nm. Hence, expect the Navi 21b variant to get close to RTX 3080 performance or maybe even an RTX 3070; while the Navi 21a should be within RTX 3060 Ti vicinity (with pricing clearly dictating the winner in those specific performance categories / slots). This is of course, all speculation, and subject to change. Nonetheless, we are given a decent blueprint here for possible Navi (21, 22, 23) performance in the mean time.

The big sticking point for me currently is Nvidia's DLSS. AMD thus far has nothing to match it, and it frankly gives Nvidia a huge edge. Granted, not every game supports it, but more and more will over time. Even if AMD somehow came out with GPUs more powerful than Nvidia's, you'd still get better perf out of Nvidia's simply because of DLSS. I'm not sure AMD can even compete with that, since they don't have any AI chops.

If the price is right and the IPC gain is there I could see a 3080 competitor easily. Maybe not so much the 3090

Boost clocks can't be real. There's no way a 6700 XT has a 1500MHz base and 2500MHz boost clock. Guaranteed base and boost clocks are not that far apart. Maybe it's base and max boost assuming power, voltage and temperature are in check but certainly not the numbers they'll put on the box. Or it could be the max boost that the driver or program reports.

 

Even the 6900 XT has a 700MHz difference. No way, Jose.

If AMD's offerings in the low end of GPUs beat Nvidia's options in the mid rand, next gen AMD will be like 3rd gen ryzen. RDNA took  away the low-end, and gave Nvidia a warning that AMD will be a force to be reconed with, if some problems can be sorted out.  RDNA 2.0 is like Ryen 2nd gen. Really good cards that send a message to Nvidia to get their shit together. If they ingore AMD like Intel, RDNA 3.0 (if thats what they call it) can blow Nvidia out of the watter, and send them home crying.

lol, yeah, it would probably be good if amd never change the names, and they were ATI cards still. Or if we called they Radeon cards instead of AMD cards. Though, AMD would be good if they can get more on board/dgpus in laptops, as nvidia has control there

Even the 6900 XT has a 700MHz difference. No way, Jose.

It's not too far off. The 3080's base clock is 1.44 GHz, but some cards are easily boosting beyond 1.9 GHz. der8auer has gotten an 3090 above 2 GHz (stable) with air cooling (and power mod). We'll have to wait and see.

Now to wait for pricing... And see if it forces Nvidia to lower their prices a bit.

Thought I should post this, as it can be used as a relevant/useful metric for brainstorming/determining what possible RDNA 2 performance should/can look like on the upcoming RX 6000-series (and of course this is an official AMD slide, and will be subject to consisting of extreme cherry picking, but nevertheless, +/- 10-15% is a relatively respectable elbowroom and more realistic / more accurate P-P-W estimate; compared to the given +50% max theoretical, so, around 35-40% instead, on average):

I guess the counter to this would be asking just how many games Nvidia have trained DLSS for so far. I know they're saying the next iteration of their upscaling tech will work across all games that use Temporal AA, but I've heard that kind of sales pitch before by tech companies lol. 

 

While I'm also a big fan of Nvidia's deep learning upscaling, I would much prefer a method of upscaling that works for all games out of the box, so to speak, but is better than the "dumb" algorithms of upscaling that are currently in use (bilinear, bicubic, sinc, lanczos, etc). AMD are generally focused on this kind of catch-all implementation, much like their Free-sync to Nvidia's G-sync. I'm not getting my hopes up they or Sony or Microsoft can come up with a smarter scaling algorithm that at least competes on some level with DLSS, but it would be nice so that competition doesn't die.
