RMx 650W for 3090 + 3700X

Stahlmann

Hello good people,

i've been thinking about a 3090, but i only have a Corsair RMx (2018) 650W 80+ Gold PSU. I know it's a great unit, but I've heard from 3090 reviewers (don't quite recall which exact one because i've watched so many) the 3090 could suck over 500W peak for brief moments. This would leave no overhead for my system and probably overload the PSU. Should i look into upgrading my PSU when getting a 3090? Also running a sound card with a supplemental power connector, a D5 pump and 6 120mm fans.

Current Parts list (excluding D5 pump) Estimated Wattage 559W, but some parts could draw quite a bit more due to boos behavior:

Should be allright, at worst it shuts down due to protections kicking in. And the rmx isnt known to be transient sensetive.

Edit: tldr its fine.

3090 is essentially a titan you might be able to get away with your psu but i recommend you to buy a better one

if it was useful give it a like :) btw if your into linux pay a visit here

Haven't heard of people having trouble with the RMx when it comes to high transient GPUs, so I'd say you'll be fine.

Just maybe not with 3090s like the Strix, with 480W power limits (I wouldn't recommend running that high of a power limit anyway, since for ~30% more power and heat output, you're getting probably less than 5% extra performance).

Desktop: Intel Core i9-9900K | ASUS Strix Z390-F | G.Skill Trident Z Neo 2x16GB 3200MHz CL14 | EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER XC Ultra | Corsair RM650x | Fractal Design Define R6

Laptop: 2018 Apple MacBook Pro 13"  --  i5-8259U | 8GB LPDDR3 | 512GB NVMe

a few notes with your budget i recommend b550 or x570 board and you don need to pay 200 euros for a windows license you can buy a oem licence for 10 bucks on ebay

Also @GoldenLag @mahyar

Just bought the TUF model, which is 350W TDP afaik. Should arrive in 2 days. I'll try to stay with my trusty RMx 650W. If i have any issues i can still switch it out. Like you said, worst thing that could happen is a shutdown and then i'll know better.

This is my current setup. Everything but the 3090 is already built and running for a while now. I don't need any PCIe 4.0 features from B550 or X570 so my mobo is fine for my usecase. My windows license only cost me 16€, it was an OEM key.

Thanks for the input guys and have a great day!

I assume you allready own these drives, because this is very expencive for no good reason.

These were just the market prices when i created the list, i've had these for years now.

The TUF has the stock 350-375W power limit afaik, so that should be fine.

My guess is it'll work - if it doesn't though, it's a shame but nothing more should happen than just a shutdown.

Keep us updated!

My recommendation: Get a brand name 80+ Gold or better PSU rated for 850 Watts or more.

If you can't spare the money on a new PSU right now because you are already saving up on that graphics card, I'd disable the CPU boost in bios. That should give your card a bit more headroom until you can get are more powerful PSU.

Wattage wise he really doesnt need a new PSU tho. Issue is if its transient sensetive. At which point a 850w transient sensetive PSU is prone to tripping.

If you do have shutdown issues. Would love to hear from you.

PSU-cultists are keeping an eye on this to know what units trip or not.

(The people behind the PSU tierlist)

Some units are known to trip, and others are just candidates

What exactly is meant with "trip"?
