Google removed video streaming platform LBRY from Play Store

Spotty
Go to solution Solved by Spotty,

The app has been restored on the Google Play Store.

egarding google banning sexual content, its not entirely their decision, its largely due to payment processors' guidelines and US laws.

Then HBO would not be on the Play store, Seriously have you ever seen an episode of Game of Thrones? Lots of sexual content in that show. Hell most American TV and Movies have "Suggestive" content. So by those links most streaming services should be banned.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

OnlyFans isn't on the Play store or App store. I think it was removed for the same reason of containing sexual content.

Just had a look at the Play Store and there's what appear to be fake OnlyFans apps but no legitimate app. Maybe Google should be working on pulling the fake apps instead of LBRY.

Someone likely hit the report button or something similar to originally have it on Google's radar.  (I'm guessing if there were people reporting the other apps, they would be removed as well)

Regarding google banning sexual content, its not entirely their decision, its largely due to payment processors' guidelines and US laws. All the major payment processors have banned transactions that include sexual content (you can see a full list here), so I imagine google would have trouble keeping companies like paypal with them if they allowed this stuff. And part of the reason these companies do this is because of laws like sesta, which is like one of those bad copyright laws that always get threatened to pass, except this one actually was. It makes any transaction involving sexual content a possible legal liability.

tl;dw, while google has some say in the matter, its not something entirely in their control. Assuming the issue with the app is actually about the sexual content.

Yea, my guess as well is that they don't have a way of really flagging violating videos either.  There is the reporting copyright, but not a button to report other infringing content (with that said, they seem to have a super lax take on what is allowed)

Loading the app up for the first time and the first thing I see is content creators that wear MAGA hats and pro trump videos so no guessing for me why Google/they chopped it. I can't even use Google search to do real school research anymore it just seams so biased.

This might be a bit of a hot take, but I personally think Google and Apple shouldn't try to police morality on their stores.

Let me be clear here, that's not the same thing as harboring illegal content. Fact is if I as a consumer want to download a pornography app that should be my choice. Limiting access to this sort of stuff is yet another reason in favor of opening up the app ecosystem.

My main reason for wanting this is because private companies should not be trying to set moral guidelines in any circumstances. Morals are tightly coupled to whatever the popular zeitgeist is. Do what the law requires and then back off.

And especially for apps with user-generated content, it's on the app to police their users for illegal activities; if they're failing in their duties, a court can tell Google and/or Apple to remove the app, but why on earth would they do so before then?

Idealistically that might be a good idea, but the issue becomes troublesome with laws, lawsuits, and other companies like payment providers.

As other's have mentioned PayPal has that sort of clause and there are many providers that limit it as well.  So Google and Apple may not have too much choice in some of those terms just to maintain payment providers.  Other issues is are laws themselves.  Just look at how much trouble Google is getting into tracking youth under 13 despite it strictly not being "allowed" to use it while under 13.  It's a similar thing as to why google has content ID and makes some of the moves they do (because there were lawsuits launched they weren't doing enough to police)

Apparently LBRY has no iOS app.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

As of writing the app still isn't available, but it seems it will be back soon. LBRY still aren't happy with the double standards for apps on the play store.

Sexual Content and Profanity? aren't there 100's of apps similar? doesn't netflix and amazon count for sexual content by the R rated movies?

I can find twitch streams that are full of profanity and suggestive content within minutes, I think this is probably stupid over-reach. Likewise there is stuff on Netflix that goes far beyond what "Cable TV (eg HBO)" would go. They literately aired a documentary where people and animals were killed and the footage only partially redacted.

Like, my personal opinion this is split:

On one hand, if an app targeted at Y/Y7/G type audiences at all, then it should ONLY have that content on it, and nothing else, anything targeted at under 13's should be within this halo.

On the other hand I don't like censorship, but I find the average person, even adults, pick up things sometimes because it's cool but then are in denial that the cool thing is actually very very bad.

At that time in history I had no idea you could see vagina's and boobs up close on YouTube.  Was also the first time I witnessed a placenta in any way shape of form lol.

Never heard of LBRY (How is it pronounced?) but it seems dumb when I can post videos currently on YouTube with more nudity.

The Neighbourhood - Afraid music video. I'm not finding the time stamp, but there's an explicit long john shot. Granted, you need to be signed in and over 18, but it's still present.

Justin Timberlake - Tunnel Vision. Lots of nakey ladies.

If the play store is removing this stuff, shouldn't they also ban Twitter? Porn stars have Twitter. And... Instagram or something? Some other popular photo app.

I clearly remember a lot of sexy time, Boobs and wangs being in Game of Thrones. I do recall Netflix content with similar content.

Netflix is proudly showing softcore child porn with Cuties.

Google: Literally hosting a video showing how far a penis bends when inserted into a vagina using a camera from the inside of the vagina.

Also Google: We're pulling this app because it shows a man and a woman lying on top of each other in a mildly suggestive way.

I'm astonished but not surprised.

that is very much an oversimplification, for reasons I already explained. twitter, tiktock, facebook, and instragram are all much much larger competitors to youtube than this app that no one ever heard of.

yeah, maybe  but then these aren't video hosting platforms, not in the sense what youtube is (note I have no friggin clue what "tiktok" is...) and in case of fb and twitter aren't really direct competitors, I'd even say google is profiting of them a lot alone with the immense traffic those generate.

It means that he thinks you tube is fundamentally different.  I think it is and it isn’t.  YouTube is often used differently and the “social group” is totally self created and to a large degree something that is between the user and YouTube rather than between members of the social networking group, But a YouTube subscription and a social network subforum have fundamental similarities.

I think it is different but I’m not sure about fundamentally different.
