Amazon Announces Their Cloud Gaming Service

Summary

Amazon announced their cloud gaming service at its 2020 hardware event today. Luna, the name of their service, will have a base cost of $5.99. According to Amazon, more than 100 games will be available. It will also feature Twitch integration and have a $49.99 Alexa-enabled controller sold separately.

This honestly just looks like a Stadia 2.0.

I would say, if it comes included with Amazon Prime Student accounts... this might catch on. But other than that... yay Twitch integration.... I'm supposed to be excited right?

Introductory pricing... so it will be going up like we just saw with game pass on PC.

 

Wonder if Prime peeps will get either an inclusive tier (like Amazon music vs unlimited or whatever it is called), perhaps with a discount to get the full version.

Does anyone actually use cloud gaming?  To me seems like one of those things that's just being pushed as "the next thing" when in reality it's always going to have latency and compression issues that make any sort of PVP game non-starter.

I've used Geforce Now for many games, including FPS games where shooting first matters. If you have a decent connection, with a low ping the latency doesn't bother me. I am not playing competitive, but I am paying to win, which from my experience it hasn't hindered.

The price (at least during early access) is right, but Luna still faces an uphill battle. Cloud gaming is still pretty rough, and not the greatest value right now.

I don't think this is big enough for its own post but it is worth of mentioning anyways.

 

Luna runs on Windows and Nvidia graphics, to be specific Amazon is using their own EC2 G4 instances that runs Intel cascade lake CPU and Nvidia turing based T4 GPU with 8.1 teraflops, this is why it can launch with 100 of games in a beta state since it's the same PC version of games developers already made.
