Installing m.2 on new build; not found

I'm trying to get a friend's PC going, and it won't find the m.2 drive. It has Windows installed on it from his last system. 

 

Old: Gigabyte Z370 Gaming 7

New: Gigabyte Z490 Aourus Elite 

 

What's the procedure? 

 

Drive is an Intel 660.

Have you checked the NVME settings in the BIOS?

There are none that work.

Well that certainly didn't work. Now it doesn't boot at all.

try test booting with minimal thing plugged in

After a bit of testing the drive works in one of the lower m.2 slots

Haven't decided if he's going to RMA it or not yet. Or just return it since it's from Amazon.

I don't know why it won't work in the first slot.

Is the first slot connected directly to CPU lanes? Could try reseating CPU

The cooler is a royal PITA. Maybe if he can find a bottle of Isopropyl.

What cooler is it?

Toomuch pressure on the CPU can be an issue too though manufacturer generally prevents you from doing that

Have you tried updating bios? You're sure it's not encrypted too right?

Doubt it, the motherboard is brand new.

Haha, he's just going to leave it. Ordered a fan hub today and it was defective, so he's done messing with it.
