RTX 3080 performing as poor as my old GTX 1070 Ti

GoldMichi
Go to solution Solved by Moonzy,

ok, lets get things in order

issues:

1) SOTR CPU limited (solved, it's really cpu limited, based on game benchmark's info, and the fps is about what i'd expect)

2) GPU not utilising 100%

3) GPU running hot when it's above 90% usage

solution:

1) new cpu to raise FPS, new monitor to utilise gpu more, but will get lower avg fps if you also face gpu bound

2) run unigine heaven, you'll be able to stress test the gpu to make sure it's not a faulty unit

3) side panel test, if it worked then

3a) change casing

3b) reconfigure current setup to fully utilise what you currently have

did i miss anything?

You noticed a significant temp change eh?

I'm still rocking a S340 Elite for one of my secondary systems -- it's almost due for an overhaul.

275R Airlfow is a pretty nice case (built a Ryzen 3600 system for my cousin using that case last year)

Yeah, overall case flow improved. It's hard to say because I don't have a completely controlled environment like real reviewers, but suffice it to say that before when my GPU temperatures would hit 80c on memory and 90c on hotspot, they are a good 5c lower on average. I think that's significant.

Plus, that acrylic side panel was scratched from day 1. The glass is so much prettier.

If it's anything like the standard S340, it has pretty weak airflow and adding fans in the front doesn't really help too much. I had 2x140mm corsair fans in mine and i don't know if they even did anything.

The only way that case seems to perform well is if you have super powerful exhaust fans..

that isn't going to even sweat your GPU in classic, unless something else is terribly wrong

If you go into the settings and lock the FPS lower, does it move your usage down?

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

yes it does, when I'm locking them to say 60 fps. getting around 50% gpu usage

So you have a game telling the 3080 "Give me all you got!". 3080 says "Hold my beverage!" and you get 350 watts of TDP. Which goes back to what @Moonzy was saying with iffy thermals in that pc case.

I thought so too... but can't figure out what. but yeah as the others stated; probably poorly selected case and inoptimal airflow and such probably work together to make my build perform so bad

so what you're saying is: get a new case, don't install gpu vertically and everything should be fine?

Just moving your 3080 to horizontal mount might help some. I know in my case with about that 4 inches you were talking about, I've got 5 or so degree C difference in horizontal compared to vertical. That's with tons of fans, radiator not being intake etc.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

If he's using a vertical mount, perhaps there might be an issue with the PCIE extender?

To get back to SOTR, out of curiosity, what is your DLSS setting on? Also, in your graphics settings picture you showed, what's the "Aus" mean next to the Raytracing settings?
