NBN Co Australia to upgrade 2m FTTN premises to FTTP

Summary

Today the Australian government has announced that 2 million premises in the FTTN footprint will have access to FTTP with fibre on demand by 2023. Premises in the FTTC and HFC footprint will have access to up to Gigabit speed and premises in the existing FTTP footprint already have access to Gigabit speed.

 

This upgrade is set to create 25,000 new jobs in engineering, construction, transport and project management.

The federal government will offer last-mile fibre upgrades to half of NBN Co’s fibre-to-the-node (FTTN) footprint under a $3 billion plan announced today.

The upgrade plan, which was heavily rumoured through yesterday, will also see a further $400 million put into hybrid-fibre coaxial (HFC) upgrades and $100 million into fibre-to-the-curb (FTTC) upgrades, both aimed at supporting up to gigabit speeds.

The total of $3.5 billion for all of these upgrades will be funded from private debt markets, according to the government.

 

My thoughts

Good news for those stuck on under performing FTTN connections!

 

What a waste of time and money. If only Australia stuck with the original 93% FTTP plan but hey politics.

Let's see if they actually use it. The US would of wasted it like the money they got for rural network expansion or money from China for high speed rail way.

What Is Fibre to the Cabinet FTTC?

Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) is where a fibre optic cable is delivered to a street-side cabinet which also contains the broadband network equipment.

The end user customer is connected to this cabinet via a copper (telephone) line, known as PSTN.

Yeah HFC uses the old Telstra coax cable network and FTTC uses fibre with a short copper lead in.

 

FTTC (Cabinet) in the UK and FTTC (Curb) in Australia are not the same.

The catch seems to be: "If a customer doesn't ask for it, we won't roll the fibre to your home. If the customer demonstrates that he or she has got the demand, then we will roll the fibre [out]," Mr Fletcher said.

So as somebody on 1000/50 HFC, I imagine I demonstrate I want fibre, because I'm paying $149/m for those speeds. But I'm not to sure If I qualify for the fibre upgrade.
I really don't mind paying for part of the cost and the labor. As for the 2023 time frame.............ahahahahhah. yeah see you in 2025 when my fibre's finally getting installed if I'm even eligible to begin with.

Your in the 7% that can get Gigabit HFC and don't qualify for the FTTP fibre on demand model.

 

To have FTTP built to your premises in a few months you can ask for a $330 build quote from the NBN Technology Choice Program team and going by recent build quotes will set you back anywhere from $4000 to $40,000 AUD 🤑

Yeah most Australian premises are on HFC, FTTN and FTTC. Just over 1 million Australian premises already have FTTP.
