i would get a cheap 3600+b450+ram combo, and sell what youve got. a 3600 would age pretty nicely with 6 cores and shouldnt be too costly, a good b450 mobo like an asrock pro4 or msi pro max would be cheap and great for a 3600. regarding ram, youd want 2x8gb 3200mhz cl16, usually can find some on sale around 50 bucks.

maxing out the mentioned budget, you can save 50 bucks with 3200c16 ram and the asrock b450m pro4 but this would be a solid combo that would be a great platform for upgrades in the future, and for overclocking if that interests you:

PCPartPicker Part List
Type Item Price
CPU AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor $204.99 @ Amazon
Motherboard MSI B450-A PRO MAX ATX AM4 Motherboard $99.99 @ Newegg
Memory Crucial Ballistix 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 Memory $72.34 @ Amazon
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
  Total $377.32
  Generated by PCPartPicker 2020-09-22 17:44 EDT-0400

if you snag good deals on these parts used you can get under 300 usd for all 3, plus no tax. i have a system in progress for a friend thats a 3600, b450m pro4, and 2x8gb 3200c16, was <250 total :D

I got my first gaming computer from a hand me down and its a little more budget friendly than i prefer so i was thinking of upgrading but it has an MSI B150M Bazooka motherboard so i'm slightly limited on processors that i can buy. The compatible CPUs listed are basically any 6th gen processor. So i was wondering if a 6th gen i7 6700 will be able to run something like COD: Warzone smoothly, while discord runs in background, without freezing every few seconds like i currently get now.

Currently have an i5-6402P @ 2.80 GHz

and a Radeon RX 480 graphics card

I'm open to any ideas, as im fairly new to desktop gaming but just not sure what would be more beneficial. Just assumed it was the CPU as multitasking becomes almost impossible while playing more demanding games.

16GB would help. 8GB isnt enough in certain Games anymore. Around 12GB usage isnt uncommon.

locked intel cpus are gimped in clock speeds and the b150 chipset wont support over 2666 mhz ram iirc. a 6700 would be better than what you have but wouldnt age well. a 6700k with 3200mhz ram would be much better for smooth gaming nowadays but the entry cost to such a system without any of the proper parts on hand (especially a z series motherboard) wouldnt make any sense. if you wanna stick with what you have, a 6700 would be enough atm.

I have a 7400 and rx480, and i have stutters trying to play warzone 720p high/medium. I would get a 7700k or something, if you want to upgrade. From what I can tell, the 7700 will work, but will need to have the bios updated on your older b150m. That requires a skylake CPU, which you have

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

difference between the 6700 and 7700 is marginal, if op can find a 6700 for a few bucks cheaper than a 7700 thatd be fine as the difference is 200mhz boost clocks, plus the hassle of flashing a new bios

Maxed on most things. The ram stays at about low to mid 90's but the GPU and CPU kinda jump around.

wellll as an aside:

a delidded 6700k and a nice z270i for 250 shipped. pair that with some 50 dollar ram and thats not too bad of a deal. seller has a bit of positive feedback and your transaction would be through paypal g&s so pretty safe anyways. would be a great combo for learning about overclocking. also you'd need an aftermarket cooler but those arent super expensive, no more than 50-60 bucks
