Ryzen 3900x big FPS Drops

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

So I recently upgraded to a Ryzen 9 3900x from an i7 8700k, I know that ryzen has lower single clock speeds than intel, however, I thought it wouldn't make much of a difference.

PC Specs

Motherboard - ASUS Prime x570

CPU - Ryzen 9 3900x

GPU - GeForce GTX 1080Ti

Memory - 2x32 G-Skill Trident Neo 3600 MHz

PSU - EVGA 850w 80+ gold

My main issue is that when I play cpu intensive games such as fortnite or csgo, my frame drops are just terrible. It stutters in and out of about the 200 range and then drops to around 80 for second or so and this really throws my gaming off. When I played before with my i7 8700k I would get no lower than 160 frames mainly staying in the 210-240+ range.

I play 1080p res since that is the highest my monitor supports and with all low settings except view distance. I have tried D.O.C.P and auto setting in the bios and there seems to be no difference.

Is there a way to fix this somehow or should I return the CPU and look for a 10th gen Intel?

Welcome to the forums! Please check all drivers such as your chipset, audio, and lan for any updates. Also check your bios for a newer version. Make sure all are up to date and remember to get them off of the motherboards manufacturer website not through Windows. A DDU could also resolve the issue.

Main Desktop: CPU - I9-9900k @5ghz | Mobo - Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Master | GPU - Asus ROG STRIX 2080ti OC RAM - G.Skill Trident Z RGB 16GB 3200mhz | AIO - H100i Pro RGB | PSU - Evga 850 GQ | Case - Fractal Design Meshify C White | Storage - Samsung 970 Pro M.2 NVME SSD 512GB / Sabrent Rocket 1TB NVME SSD / Samsung 860 Evo Pro 500GB / Seagate 2TB Firecuda Hybrid Drive |

If you ask for a Mid Tower case recommend, I will 90% of the time recommend the Fractal Design Meshify C or S2.

if this doesnt work, then you have to monitor your GPU and individual CPU thread usage while gaming, and see what's limiting you when your FPS dips.

theoretically, 8700k is a better gaming chip than 3900x, but not by 2x the fps.
