Is it safe to optimize SSD with Defraggler?

So i am ditching windows built in defrag tool as it's barely any efficient in defragging HDDs properly and also as it doesn't list my media drive anymore due to some weird bug. Defraggler seems great for what it offers but only downside is it takes a bit long to defrag, took me few hours to defrag my 1tb media drive which is almost half filled yet barely had roughly 50gb of fragmentation, now i am doing it on my 2tb game drive as well which might take whole night.

 

Now coming to SSD, it advertises some zero fill technology which i wonder could be good or bad, not totally sure. It seems like an SSD based action so i guess it should be fine but still i need some clarification about it.

I am not gonna defrag it as i obviously know it's not good for them, weird to see that option being given. I have read on some other forum from what i found googling that windows should take care of itself through trim command and stuff.

 

To be sure, i will first analyze my ssd and see what's up with it and if i really need to do it, still welcome all the opinion.

you wont break it if you did it, but

1) SSD dont need to defrag if you know what defrag does

2) you're using up the write cycles

 

so it's not recommended, since it doesnt improve anything, but use up write cycles

yeah you don't need to defragment an SSD, since it doesn't work like a HDD when accessing files (you don't need to spin a disk, etc.)

 

All you'd be doing is wasting write cycles of the flash.

Reading through what they say about zero fill, firstly it is a "feature" for disks that don't support TRIM. If you have a TRIM SSD, you're good. I'm unconvinced it will help at all for those SSDs that don't support TRIM. Writing zeros to a SSD is different from the fully TRIMed state. Zero is still data. Ready to be used is not programmed with data at all. 

 

In short, it is ok to use a SSD aware "defragmenter" that actually just sends the TRIM command to ensure nothing was missed. Windows defrag does that. I assume this one can do too from what they write.

 

It may under rare situations be necessary to have a filesystem level defragmentation on SSD, but I've not in practice run into this. This is more a limitation of the filesystem than the SSD itself. I wouldn't run a traditional defrag on a SSD.

 

The fill zeros doesn't make sense to me. Either they have big brain and know something I don't, or it is just going to wear out your SSD if you were to use it.
