I forgot which area it was in business management, but the saying goes along the lines of never let past pricing decide what something is worth now. So today, if you have Pascal or older cards like many of us do, the 3080 is WAY faster and adds the features we didn't buy with Turing. Petty arguments about 2x or not don't matter. It is that much more performing.

I think the high pricing of last gen wasn't entirely down to AMD choosing not to participate in any performance GPUs. nvidia were trying to do a lot on an old process. That means big dies, which usually translates to big price.

The problem with people comparing pricing of current gen based on x% performance gain over last gen at $x-price leads to pricing treadmills. Lots of people were doing this 2 years ago trying to justify the 2080 Ti pricing because its x% faster than 1080 Ti.

Pricing fluctuation or creep based on competition, inflation, R&D, node process and yields, etc. makes sense and would be expected. Going from $500 fully unlocked chips with Fermi to $1000 not even buying you a fully unlocked chip with Kepler in the span of 2-3 years to $2500 fully unlocked chips these days does not and is nothing more than Nvidia seeing what they can get away with charging.

Also Nvidia marketing is funny with Ampere. Technically it is the same exact pricing model as Turing with the exception of the 3090 being a $300 increase over what the 2080 Ti cost, and everybody is suddenly calling it "aggressive" or "cheap" pricing.

Nvidia marketing worked.

the same way as titansss / xx80ti prem model, becoz they are priced too premium , people should totally ignore its existance (at least its price tag)

take only perf gain in account for a fair compsrison

like people getting tricked the 1070 next upgrade is 2070, but infact it should be the 2060

Well the other problem is that the xx80 tier card used to be the big chip and fully unlocked, and then it wasn't starting with the GTX 680. The price never changed to reflect that. To the 3080's credit, at least it is the big chip and not the 104 mid-range chip like the 680, 980, 1080, 2080 all were. So as far as I am concerned, pricing has been a joke for 8 years now. At least back before Turing, xx60 and xx70 class cards were priced like they should have been and not $400/$500 respectively nonsense.

Now that we've been seeing all the testing and benchmark reviews for the 3080, I'm more and more underwhelmed and Nvidia marketing really pushed a couple of cherry picked data points for marketing Ampere in the announcement video with their "up to 2x performance". Ray Tracing isn't even looking to be that much better over Turing...10% ish for now.

I do expect that to get better over time as devs adapt to how Ampere's cores work, but for now, very underwhelming.

well 2080tis are still well above €1300 here so I have literally no idea what you're talking about.

but you can hook me up with those new 2080tis for $700 😃

Many shops still have some 2080Ti stock, selling with no price drop. Honestly, don't know who's going to buy those cards at those price.

@Sir Beregond The 3090 is an RTX Titan replacement, not a 2080 Ti Replacement.

I'm not even sure it's correct to say the 3080 is the 2080 stock replacement either, given nVidia is using a much larger part of the die than they did on prior 80 series cards.

In fact, I'm not really seeing how nVidia could fit a 3080 Ti card into the line up right now, given that the 30 series seems to be right at its clock limits, and current rumors are that the extra cores in the 3090 don't do much for gaming.

The expected 20Gb versions may show up for marketing reasons, but I would expect it to be mostly just more expensive than the 3080, with no real performance difference for years down the road, and likely to eat into their 3090 sales for the applications that really need the memory.

No. It's "Titan class" from the announcement video, but very clearly not a Titan as it is not a fully unlocked GA102 chip which aligns it more as an xx80 Ti tier product with a $300 price increase over last gen and a rebrand as a new xx90 product naming scheme so people would buy into this marketing.

The 24GB of vRAM is definitely Titan like, but the not fully unlocked chip is more like an xx80 Ti.

All I know is:

I payed 680€ for a 980TI 5 years ago.

Today if available the 3080 "should be" at a similar price as what I paid for my 980TI however in benchmarks it's between 300-400% faster.

With inflation considered I'd say for me it's a pretty sweet card.

Now I understand your point, but the 1000 series was inflated in price due to the bitcoin mining (I had never seen the 1080TI below 1000€ where I live)

Then the follow up generation was too expensive to get into, everyone anticipated similar prices but NVIDIA didn't do that this time around.

So who knows what's happening with the 4000 series? One this for sure is, this is the only time in the last 5 years that I can buy a flagship card at a price/performance point that I find acceptable + the difference with my current card is high enough that it's worth it.

That said, with the "rumors" of higher VRAM cards I might wait a little longer
