$7,300 Passive CPU heatsink

HowardYing

Listed as an "organic workstation server fanless supercomputer heat sink", it's 3-D printed from either solid copper, bronze, steel, or aluminium ranging from $1,800 to $7,300. Apart from being described as for i7 chips, not much is mentioned on how it'd mount to a motherboard, let alone, much about its performance.

The base is attached to four stacks that consist of a plethora of small metal balls of different proportions. The seller claims that the very large surface-area-to-volume ratio helps absorb and dissipate the heat quicker. There doesn't seem to be any heat pipes, though, which raises the question of how it transfers the heat to the balls. And we can't quite figure out what the term "organic" in the title means.

It's an interesting thought to use this as passive cooling, cause it's practically plopping a giant chunk of metal on a CPU and expecting that to cool it. Maybe the gaps in the metal "balls???" would help dissipate heat, but at the price?

I read that the first time as well

It would probably increase the thermal preformance.

Wasn't there a youtube video where someone compared various.....liquids...for watercooling effectiveness of a PC?

this is called porous radiation cooling. it's nothing new. Yes it's moreefficient but the conductivity at the bottom seems the problematic part in this design.

I'm interested to know, why do you think the bottom seems to be the problematic part of the design?

And in terms of it being more efficient, I assume it'd be due to the increased surface area?

I recall that one. Also Boris tested with (what else?) Vodka.

Perhaps this could be a LTT video, what readily accessible...fluids....make for the best WC efficiency?

If memory serves me right, one of the very first Cray super computers were cooled with blood plasma.

Noticing those sphere collections that are supposed to look like trees are shaped a whole lot like 2 liter soda bottles. The base is shaped a lot like a casting sprue.  I would be unsurprised if the whole thing is solid metal.  Weight might be interesting.    If it’s hollow the whole thing might be one gigantic heat pipe.  Wouldn’t be hard to do.  This has handmade all over it.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.
