RDNA2 VRAM Leaks: Go buy AMD cards if you want more than 10GB.

Results45

Like AMD graphics cards released in previous years it seems that upper-midrange RX 6000 SKUs this year will have 50-60% more VRAM than their Nvidia counterparts (i.e. RTX 3070 with 8GB and RTX 3080 with 10GB).

As long as their drivers and other software features (ray-tracing, tensor-DLSS equivalent, latency/frame time reduction, direct storage access, etc.) work well, these might be better buys if they turn out to be readily available online and at stores for near MSRP and if you're looking for cards with enough VRAM for more than just gaming. On the other hand, Nvidia assures that their cards this year are "highly optimized for 4K" as well as the well-known fact that many 3D-rendering and machine-learning applications are designed to run on CUDA.

It is also rumored that Nvidia will match AMD's VRAM offerings with a 16GB RTX 3070TI and 3080 versions, but again it comes down to availability, price, and your use case.

Update: there it is......

Vram doesn't tell you the hole story. If you pair an RX550 with 16gb HBM2 memory it isn't magically faster than a 3080.

I don't think so.

When they get their new IO and compression thing going, you will load textures directly from your nvme SSD. That way you can probably save a ton of vram. There will probably be scenarios where 8 or even 10gb isn't enough but generally I'm sure Nvidia has a good plan behind it.

If AMD somehow manages to implement ray-tracing without the 30-40% performance hit that both Turing and Ampere experience, it will be an definite upgrade for me. IMO, that's how AMD wins, even if they're not able to approach the raw performance of the 3080 in non-RT games.

I have yet to see anything credible to indicate that 8GB VRAM, let alone 10GB, won't be perfectly fine for the next 5 years or more.

then watch hardware unboxed's 3080 review, in which the 2080 looses something like 20% performance on doom when having the max texture detail.

hell the 2080 review also had one case of stuttering that cards with more vram didn't

Yeah, this is not the first time it has been discussed on this forum. I think it is a bit of FUD being thrown around that if you have any less than whatever AMD gives, it'll be junk. To me, the worst that happens is you turn selected settings down a notch. Only if you need best of best might it make some difference eventually.

I did watch it. It was a single game, not indicative of any sort of a trend to be expected anytime soon. Besides which, we do not yet know how RTX IO will play into such.

honestly this argument was said when RX480 4GB was launched, everyone went to the 4gb model because it was better bang for buck than 8GB

but now 4gb vram cant even load some high quality textures, let alone ultra

but i suppose that's a small price to pay (or not pay, in this case) to have to lower your settings to save a couple bucks.

edit: personally, im with AMD on this, at least provide a high VRAM option so people who believes in having it can have it.

Having insufficient VRAM is bad.

i can attest to that one i have both, and it does make a difference, specially if you only have 8-16GB of ram, as the rest of the vram buffer will load to ram

If AMD’s card is 30-40% slower out of the gate, then it’s kind a wash, wouldn’t you think?

Pretty much impossible without a ton of additional hardware just for ray tracing, which would then be a performance hit to classic rasterization instead. Ray tracing is simply very hardware intensive. I doubt AMD will suddenly discover a magical shortcut, ray tracing has been around for some decades already.

You can have all the VRAM in the world, but if u cant suitably push the FPS at resolutions high enough to need the VRAM in the 1st place, its essentially useless.

I hope AMD can "bring it" to Nvidia, i really do. We NEED the competition, prices are getting insane. At no point should we be seeing Single Chip consumer grade gaming cards above $800.

Dual Chip (essentially SLI) cards at $1000, sure we've seen those before, but $1200 and $1500 single chip consumer cards are obscene and only the result of no competition. We havnt seen such absurd prices ,in mainstream full production cards, in over 2 decades of GPUs, even when u take into account inflation.

The only thing we have is historical information that shows every time a new console generation comes out VRAM usage increases significantly.  However its usually easy enough to mitigate if you can live without having the absolute highest settings.  Now if you run 1440p and plan on upgrading in 2-3 years its even less of an issue.  Nvidia will likely refresh pretty quickly due to being on such an inferior node.
