GPU to play 'World of Warships' other 'light' games for brother in law

steelo

Hi,

My brother in law has an extra (very old) pc he mainly uses so he can play World of Warships with his sons. I believe it is a Core 2 Duo e8400, 8 GB RAM (which I think is the max for that MB) and a Radeon HD 5450. He says that CPU usage sits at around 40% while playing Warships, but he is only getting around 18 fps on the very lowest settings. Is there a GPU out there under $30 that will at least give him acceptable frame rates? He already has 2 other computers, so he isn't looking to build another. I explained that this PC really isn't worth putting much money into. Again, this computer pretty much will only be used as an 'extra' pc so he can play World of Warships and (possibly) War thunder with his sons. I don't think he minds playing in low to medium settings as long as it's playable.

I believe the GPU would also need to not require external power, we looked at used RX 550, 460 and 560's...which I know aren't great, but would be a big improvement. The last I checked, ebay users wanted WAY too much for them (~$50 USD)

Thanks

$50 isn't too much.  They will allow him to play games, so they have value.  $50 is cheap and looks like the floor of the "usable" GPU market.

Kind of like how a few thousand is the floor for usable decently reliable cars.

Get what you pay for, but I wouldn't buy a $30 RX card.  Something would be wrong.

Do you think a RX 560 would be bottlenecked by that CPU? Also, it's very important I find a GPU that does not require external power....This is an old Dell PC and I'm not counting on the PSU having external power. Thanks

The Core Duo 8400 is a decent chip but it's OLD.  Adding an RX550 would be a decent idea but it would be a bandaid.

I don't want to disparage your friend, as I've seen you on the forum for a while including your man cave build (I was jstudrawa then), but at the end of the day...  you boy may need to pony up.

A 3400G or similar would be fantastic for his needs but would require a PSU and RAM, etc.

That all said, yes... the RX550 would be good match and no require any additional power connections.

Please note that if his PSU is as old as the 8400... it may not last much longer either.

I have no idea what the relative performance is, but I'd look at a 750Ti as a higher performance, lower cost card that doesn't need a power supply connection.

If they have decent internet WOWS is on GeForce now. I tried it for a short time to compare with running locally, and this type of game is less impacted by latency concerns. So cloud gaming might be something to look into? I only tried it on the free tier which will have its limitations.

Main system: i9-7980XE, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, Corsair Vengeance Pro 3200 3x 16GB 2R, RTX 3070, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, Acer Predator XB241YU 24" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync + HP LP2475w 24" 1200p 60Hz wide gamut
Gaming laptop: Lenovo Legion 5, 5800H, RTX 3070, Kingston DDR4 3200C22 2x16GB 2Rx8, Kingston Fury Renegade 1TB + Crucial P1 1TB SSD, 165 Hz IPS 1080p G-Sync Compatible

That is very interesting, so he'd be able to 'stream' it on his old pc for free while it runs on a server? Could you provide instructions on how to do that?

Thanks, I'm sure at the end of the day my bro-in-law will want yet another laptop or pc but my sister won't let him...haha. He also has a Pentium D machine and asked about upgrading...I told him to use it as a paperweight 😃

Yeah, sounds like he's a collector.  He needs to consolidate and run one decent machine for his needs :)

But GeForce NOW does sound like an option.  Not sure if you have to pay monthly or not tho.

Look up Geforce Now directly. You essentially download their client, set up an account if not already got an nvidia one, and away you go on the free tier (with limitations!).

The main downside I think is that free tier will be low in the queue to access the servers, and I have no idea what capacity they have. Once in you only have one hour sessions. I don't know if they save settings in the cloud for you, so worst case you have to apply any UI customisations each time.

Hey! I was just checking it out...looks like you can get a free 6 mos trial. That will at least hold him over for awhile. I will mention it to him...worse comes to worse he can parsec into my wifes PC to play, but I'm not sure about how bad the latency will be, we are in KY and they are in MI...LOL

Yes, he is definitely a 'collector' I built him a PC last winter (which became my nephews) and he's since purchased yet another Ryzen laptop. My nephews (9 and 10) really enjoy playing WoW with their uncle and dad...I think this is the main reason why he 'needs' so many computers...LOL

Just tried it on my PC...of course, I have a pretty good internet connection. Ran WoW max settings at 75 fps (that's my max monitor refresh) with almost no latency. It did sometimes get a little blurry, but I was amazed how well it worked. I don't know about my bro-in-laws connection, but hopefully it works for him!
